74 /100 HOOGGELEGEN RD, DURBANVILLE The brewery here is a little bit of an afterthought, as it is mainly a winery and game ranch associated with some beer for the occasional traveler. But it is a beautiful estate and a ridiculously nice restaurant and space. The brewery itself is sparse, with plastic fermenters and a cobbled together system. But, the beers they were making with what they had were fairly impressive considering, nothing amazing, but nothing terribly bad either; typical South African styles: lager, brown, weisse, pale, etc. Service was amazing, freindly, knew the beer really well and excited to get you to try it. Food was very good as well. I think it's a bit of a destination, but if you make it out you won't be dissapointed, as I think they are trying to grow this brand and they're putting a lot of time behind it right now. A plus, the spritzer cocktail you get when you arrive! |
68 /100 10 BRIGID ROAD, DIEP RIVER Massive space, with a huge open taproom that looks at the brewhouse, and a huge patio that looks at keg storage and a few homegrown hop bines. Service was attentive and knew the beer very well, but food took quite a while, bearing there was a large group and a smaller kitchen staff than normal. Selection is varied and fairly large, but none of them were very good. Food was much better than the beer, burgers and fries and whatnot. A cool spot, and one of the originators of craft beer in South Africa, but the beer is not where it should be. |
84 /100 156 VICTORIA ROAD, WOODSTOCK In a slightly less traveled area of town, and not open very often for drinks to the public, so definitely confirm before going there. The taproom is through the brewery, up some homemade stairs that are tight, much like a boat, to a small bar area inside, and an awesome patio out back with a great view of Devil's Peak. Nautical theme is evident but not overstated, and it is definitely built to have beers and a good conversation. Service is great! They are passionate abouth their beer, and some of the nicest people you'd meet. Selection is ok, all the beers they produce, which was 8 different ones between the draft and bottle selection, but all were pretty well done, a few standouts, a few misses. Definitely worth the stop if you have more than a day in Cape Town, and walking distance from Devil's Peak Taproom, Ukhamba Beerworx, and Woodstock Brewing, so you can make a day of it. |
58 /100 The Bistro (Restaurant) INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURES, CAPE TOWN AIRPORT typically, having flown into Joburg which has a brewpub in departures, our exit was via Cape Town which has only one bar with nothing remotely craft. Salvation in the departure lounge, as the one airside cafe has a small range of bottles from Boston, Jack Black and the like. |
