“Stopped into Tacoma's newest brewery (I think) on my last road trip down south, and decided to check this place out while waiting out the dreadful Tacoma traffic with a bite and a brew. Located just a mile or so off the I5, so it's simple to get to, and if you have time to do some brew hopping, it's right next to 7 Seas and Harmon. So location is excellent as far as my scale goes. Lots of different house beers on tap, good variety, and all offered in imperial pints, schooners, or tasters. Perfect for tasting a few, and still being able to hit the road again after. Setting reminds me of a diner. It might have been one before it was a brewery. Booths and bar tables, self seating, and really fast and friendly service. Food menu offers some brats and various pub grub. Everything was tasty. Overall, a good addition to the growing Tacoma beer crawl. Enjoyed this visit.“

“Been here a few times. Can/bottle selection is good. Tap selection is even better. Food menu is small but tasty. Would definitely come here more often is it weren't across town.“

“A large open space with a long bar and plenty of seating. They serve up a variety of hot dogs withe plenty of creative toppings. My wife and I enjoyed both of ours. The beer list is extensive and top notch. They do have a cask offering, too. Quick and friendly service. Great place.“

“Good service in a nice space. Not much to say, really. Their beers are usually pretty decent and it is a "cute" place to visit at least once. Close to many other breweries so definitely worth a stop if in the area.“

“A beautifully decorated and large space with great views over the bay. Service was friendly and quick. We got a flight and a couple extra and the beers ranged from good to very good. There were two parties going on while we were there and we still had tons of room to ourselves. Definitely a nice space and worth a stop.“

“We stopped in early on a Saturday afternoon so the place was fairly empty. Just a few other patrons at the bar. A cozy, well maintained tavern with hints of dive among the comfortable feel. The beer list is rather extensive for a local tavern with some really interesting and varied beers on- not just IPAs, which was nice. Had a cask bitter and a sour on my visit. Service was quick and friendly. We played a couple games of pinball and enjoyed the beers inside a comfortable neighborhood tavern. I can't think of a better way to drink beers.“

“This was the first stop on our crawl. Built in an old firehouse, the space oozes character. We sat out front as it was one of the last beautiful days of the year, most likely. Service was nice after the initial slow start. We had the hummus plate, which was tasty. They don't have flights, but they do have four oz tasters. They are pretty pricey. Tried a bunch of their stuff as well as a couple of the more interesting guest beers. A really nice place to drink beer.“

“Went here to be part of a poetry reading in a room off to the side of this large, open, noisy pub. The calamari was very god and the burger above average--but all the prices here a little high to me. Excellent service--one guy was handling the 24-30 people in this room and he was always in motion and always attentive. 8 house beers or so, no guest taps. the too beers i had were competent.“

“I stopped by on a Monday afternoon so the place was pretty empty, but was mightily impressed none-the-less. Large space with plenty of seating and wide aisles for when it gets packed. Large open windows up front let the fresh air in, which is nice. Tap list was varied and impressive. Had some standards but also many hard to find and/or top notch beers pouring. Many of the beers came multiple sizes and a 10 oz pour of a big DIPA only set me back 2.50, which was fairly inexpensive, IMO. The bottles selection in the back is extensive and varied enough from the other bottle stores around to peak my interest. Prices are all fair and only a buck more per bottle if you want to consume it on sight. The staff was friendly and super helpful, too. I really enjoyed my brief stay and it’s definitely worth going a little out of your way for.“

“Great space. Great bottle coolers. Great tap list. Great beer prices. Proper glassware, nice selection, overall a good place to drink. Given that 1111 runs their kitchen, the food should be at that level, too. And the appetizers ARE actually good. But the sandwiches are bland, despite the awesome descriptions on the menu. Soup was okay, but expensive, and the sandwiches just tasted like lunch meat on a Gai’s roll, like something you’d make as a teenager who doesn’t cook much. I’m hoping it was just training day in the kitchen or something, because there must be a good version of these sandwiches in the chef’s mind’s eye or somewhere. The sandwiches at the 1111 are rad, and the prices there are much better. But this place blows it away on beer selection.“

“Cool old space, not huge, well built out. A block or so away from Odd Otter, worth hitting both at same time. Big wooden tables. Pretty quiet on a Friday night. Beer is fine, a fairly interesting mix of styles. Nice music, friendly bartender. You can do much worse.“

“Funny (or should I say odd) brewery in a nice old space. Popular and comfy. A surprisingly large selection of their own beers, available in a wide variety of sizes. Ok price on tasters. Beer varies in quality but is usually interesting. If beer were better I’d consider coming here more often. But it is a fun stop.“

“Quickly becoming a classic PNW destination. Fantastic space in a unique old building.. a brick firehouse. Food is off of a huge pub menu, and is rather delicious for what it is. I love the fries. Fair tap list, half/half with house beers and interesting guest taps. I often find the guests to be more interesting than what they are offering, especially if you aren’t after their small batch sours. Lots of house bottles for takeaway, plus a very interesting (and reasonably priced) list of bottles available for there. I don’t always love the E9 beers, but when they’re good, they’re very good.“

“These guys have an absolutely amazing space that’s fully appropriate for all ages--kids are welcome, and it’s wheelchair-accessible. I believe there’s an elevator in here somewhere, too; big service elevator from when it used to be a car dealership. Not sure if it’s still in service. It’s a kickass ancient brick building, warehouse-sized, with big buttressed ceilings and giant windows on two walls. Perfect place to reclaim and start a brewery with a great big taproom.

There’s no food, but they clearly welcome outside grub. They even have PSP menus, among others, sitting right out on the bar. There’s plenty of seating around the bar and scattered around tables and chairs. There are big leather couches back over there somewhere.

I just can’t get over what a nice job they’ve done with the carpentry, making it look appropriately industrial while keeping it perfectly welcoming and comfortable. The industrial aesthetic works well with their branding, which is their other big accomplishment. The whole dystopia vibe could play well with an enlightened, politically-aware perspective of life right here on planet earth, but they’ve opted for the more sci-fi vision of totalitarianism, though they mix in a lot of graphics from agitprop and nazi germany to flesh out the visuals. Given a possible interest they seem to maybe have in nordic heritage, you could be forgiven for taking this as somewhat alarming, but there’s nothing off-putting about the space or the staff.

The beer’s okay at this point; if you’re a geek you might quibble with some details but for most folks this stuff is just fine. Prices are good and there’s tons of elbow room--great place to have a beer.“

“Visited during a Tacoma brewery crawl. Pacific is one of about 5 that are walkable in the area from each other. Right next to Odd Otter. This place was a fun stop. Walking up to the building, and pushing a massive door to get in, I expected a huge place, but the taproom was really small. Most of the space in the building seems to be used for production. 9 beers on tap, very clean and modern looking place. Beer poured in 9 or 16 oz. Quiet in here for a Friday night, but they beer was pretty good, and the staff was great. Very friendly, and great conversation. Fun styles on their "small batch series", including some barrel aged beers, and belgian style ales. Cool place.“

“Cool place next to a few other breweries, perfect for a crawl stop. Small place, very modern. Cool lighting! 14 of their own beers on tap, including a lot of really fun styles. Port barrel aged barleywine, Imperial Stouts and porters. Very cool list. 3 guest cider options. Flagship, and best seller, the Ottermelon Hefe seemed to be pouring all night, and they sell 12 and 22 oz bottles of it. Draft offered in 5, 10, and 16 oz. 5 oz samples go for $2-3. Sadly, no longer dog friendly, but it sounds like that is the case for all the Tacoma breweries, for a recent law change. Bring your own food. A very enjoyable stop for me. Good beer. In the area doing a crawl, I would call this an important stop.“

“It’s impossible to overstate how cool this location is for a brewery. Tucked all the way down on the water, actually out on the dock, with commanding views all the way around from the bridges, over the mountains, and away down the Sound. There’s nothing like it in the brewery world around Puget Sound, as far as I know. (In Bellingham, Chuckanut comes close, but it doesn’t look at scenery that’s quite this dramatic).

The space itself is kinda chopped up; you zigzag through this room and that room to get to the bar. Everything’s nice--nice clean hardwood floors, everything’s well taken care of, bathrooms are more than presentable (though not fancy at all). The staff are super friendly and nice for sure, and the prices are more than fair.

I’ve been hoping for the last few years that they’ll bump up the quality of the beer, and they’re getting more adventurous with the stuff they brew. Their beers are easy enough to drink, and the setting certainly makes it possible to thoroughly enjoy anything they put in front of you. And I know they have guys on the brew deck now who are more than capable. Right now, the beers still don’t have the clarity and personality that they’re capable of, but hopefully they’ll be able to sort that out with some new releases and whatnot soon. I will definitely be back to tip a few pints here. What a spectacular setting.“

“Visited a few months back while in Tacoma for a golf outing. What’s a round of golf without a beer to follow? Strip mall location, and from the outside, I expected a much smaller selection. Pleasantly surprised to see a massive bottle selection, with some pretty rare stuff. A lot of south sound, regional stuff that doesn’t all make it up to Seattle, so it seems. Good taplist, that left me with a tough decision. I plan on making this a regular stop when I’m in the area. Very cool place.“

“First and foremost, Gig Harbor Brewing is not actually located in Gig Harbor. In fact, it’s located in the spot that feels least like Gig Harbor within the shortest possible drive from the city limits. It’s in the Nalley Valley, so named because everything down here is either a manufacturing or processing plant, the biggest being Nalley Foods. There are quite a few other light industrial structures, and there’s no shortage of overpasses and onramps. But mostly it’s an industrial area.

I’ve teased them on Facebook about keeping their name after finding real estate only outside the city limits of their namesake. They’re pretty nonchalant about it. They’re GH folk, and they’re only a few miles down Highway 16 from GH, so why not? Let ’em have the name. At least they didn’t call the place "Manhattan Brewing" or "Paris Brewing" or something.

They’ve taken over a big shoebox-shaped building with high ceilings and plenty of space for both a brewhouse and a taproom. They have plenty of seating, clean comfortable restrooms, and a shuffleboard table. In fact, the first thing you smell when you walk in is the fresh sawdust in service on the shuffleboard table.

The beer list is fairly short, focused mainly on anglo ales—IPAs, APAs, stouts, porters, etc. Good stuff. They’re brewing clean and interesting beers with a clear identity. They’re pretty new, but I’d have to put them pretty high on the list of South Sound breweries already. I know the brewmaster has been brewing professionally for a decade and a half, and the experience shows in the glass.

Prices are good here, and there’s some nice basic swag to go (growlers and such). I really enjoyed stopping here, and would definitely return. “

58 /100 1126 COMMERCE S
“This place has a lot of positives working in its favor, especially on paper. Let’s take a look at those first.

They scored a really cool location on Commerce, next to a kickass new dumpling house, with an interesting-looking tea house on the other side. I could probably spend most of an afternoon between these three businesses. There’s a parking garage right across the street, and they’re right on the light rail line.

Their space is cool, too: A long shoebox with minimal frontage. Brewhouse in the back with tables out front at the bar.

They’ve finished it out well, with an attractive bar and nice matching tables and chairs, plenty of room to maneuver. They’re attacking an ambitious array of beer styles that are interesting and easy to drink—lagers and Belgians in addition to the bigger anglo ales (like IPAs and stouts). On paper, there’s everything to like about these guys. Great first impression.

Unfortunately, they need to completely rethink their approach to recipes and processes in the brewhouse. Everything we tried was watery—no aromatics, minimal flavor, under-carbonated. There seemed to be residual flavors of cleaning solution in the glass, too. The brewer was behind the bar, and he had to pour entire glasses with runoff before he could pull schooners of the beers. He served them in frosted glasses, which is also a mystifying choice for a serious brewery. It’s hard to understand how he can taste these batches of beer and choose to serve them, let alone charge for them. It’s devastating to your brand. Odder still, I think I heard him tell another customer that a normal 4-pint growler fill was $36. That’s outrageous for these beers. The most expensive growler fill I saw at any other brewery Saturday was $18…and that came WITH the growler price, not just the beer itself.

I’d love for this place to find its footing and start doing great things, but there still need to be some adjustments before that happens. “

74 /100 1000 TOWN CENTER NE STE 160
“This is my old neighborhood right here; I can remember my parents driving us to this address back when it was just a little green shed of a grocery store called "Bergie’s," and none of this other stuff was here at all. Having room for half a dozen businesses still feels "new" to me, but let’s face it, it’s been a couple decades since these buildings went up. That end space still can’t make up its mind which supermarket it’s gonna be, though. It changes hands every couple years. Bergie’s outlived all of the other ones put together, I think. We came in try N47 Brewing yesterday, and there was another going out of business sale sign up in the grocery store window. Maybe if you hurry you can get chips and dip on clearance, and see whether N47 will let you bring them in to have with a beer.

These guys built a nice little taproom, in here with the hardware store and the diner and everybody else. I think they took over for a pizza place? Not that it matters. You just get mentally lost trying to remember all this stuff when it’s your childhood home. Of course, back when I was riding my bike past this place, the thought of a brewery setting up shop in such a small space was beyond imagining; back then, breweries were only huge factories, there were no restaurant-sized community gathering place breweries. N47 has brought that model home to Browns Point.

There is a big bar halfway back, with flat screens tuned to the game visible from all the stools and tables. Tables and chairs fill the front of the space; presumably the brewhouse is in back. They have charming signs out front and inside, encouraging everyone to enjoy themselves, without any corny undergraduate innuendo—more like a fun dinner party. The staff are super pleasant and friendly, and the beers are listed on hand-lettered chalkboards above the bar and in the taproom.

They have great shirts, hats, glasses, and tap handles—all the iconography is just spot-on everywhere you look. They have a solid little line of easy-drinking anglo ales; IPA, ESB, blond, and so on. What we tried was okay, but we’re here REALLY early in the game, so they’re still dialing in their system. If I still lived around here, I would be in here all the time without a doubt. “

“I was there when they were building the place and now that is done, it is pretty decent considering the tight budget and work done in house. Lots of high top seating and mini events going on nightly. In a trendy part of town with nice service. Selection is expansive and beer ranges from poor to great, so worth it if you get lucky. No food but you can bring in in from all the restaurants surrounding it. A decent stop and surrounded by other breweries.“

“It was nice and quiet on the Thursday night that I visited, which made for a nice experience. I am told they can get very busy with frat boys on some nights, so I’m glad that didn’t coincide with my visit. Nice taplist of about 20 beers when I visited, about half of which were house beers and the rest guest taps. You can order a pre-set flight of their house beers: $6.25 for 6 tasters, a ridiculously good deal. However, you can’t do flights or order taster sizes of the other beers. Guest taps were very good, including some Trois Dames, Boneyard and Barley Brown’s. Service was super friendly and even fairly knowledgeable. Bottle list was also excellent, which featured a nice array of sours and BA imperial stouts for very reasonable prices (not that much further marked up than store prices). Definitely worth a stop when in town.“

“Just down the street from Odd Otter, this place was a cool experience. 9 house beers on tap, mostly all of solid quality. Service is super friendly -- the bartender couldn’t have been more welcoming, friendly, informative and generous. The interior is modern and clean, which aims for an historic feeling based on the history of the company. But the downside of this place is the prices. $14 for a 5 x 7 oz. flight is rather outrageous. I’d rather see those serving sizes at around 4-5 oz. and the price no more than $10 for that. Aside from this, I recommend checking this place out.“

“This is a young and upcoming place that shows a lot of promise. 9 house beers on tap, many of which were ambitious styles (imperial stout, double IPA, a red wine BA beer, etc.). You order at the bar, and the service is friendly enough and quick. Beer quality varies, with a few very good ones, a few poor ones, and a few in the middle. Prices are reasonable for flights ($2 for a 5 oz. pour of their regular brews and $3 for a 5 oz. pour of their specialty ones). Worth the stop when doing a brewery tour in Tacoma, and it’s just down the street from Pacific Brewing & Malting.“

“Downtown Tacoma brewery. I can’t lie - I am not a fan of the Tacoma meter maids. They are sharky as hell, and even wrote me up for not turning my wheels the proper way. So that’s a turnoff for actually spending time in Tacoma. I was paranoid and sat outside here to make sure they didn’t get me. The Odd Otter beers are odd, as billed, and it works more often than it doesn’t. I like their beers and their philosophy, so will return.“

“This was quite a surprise. I’d heard about it but didn’t expect quite the selection. They have a couple very long coolers with loads of bombers and six packs available. Loads of local and regional brews as well as some of the more popular national and imported brews. A solid selection of many styles, including the faddish sour and wild brews. They have a different selection than many of the other places in the area. Prices seemed normal to me, maybe a tad higher on some of the harder to find stuff, but it didn’t seem outlandish. The aisles seem slightly cramped but nothing too bad. They really crammed a bunch of beer into this fruit stand. Definitely wort a stop if in the area.“

“What an awesome place to visit every time I happen to be in the area. The location is nice, and happens to be a half block away from the Red Hot, another favorite of mine. This place is a full restaurant, as well as a brewery with over 30 taps, split with guest taps and their own beers. They will occasionally have really fun events, as I found out yesterday, attending their packed house Sour Fest. Beers are good, food is good, staff is great. “I originally drove past PD since it is in a pretty non-description strip mall. But once inside the clean, well lit, well stocked feel cheered me up a bit. I grabbed a pint and started browsing. Their selection is nearly all PNW based but they have a decent overseas/Belgian selections and I did spot some Victory Summer Love, which is a great east coast beer. Service was attentive and highly knowledgeable. I had a couple minor questions which were politely answered (I wanted to make sure it was ok to break up their six packs of cans and bottles- it is). I stopped in mid-day on a Friday so there were about 8 or ten others in PD with me. Plenty of room and did not feel crowded. They have two coolers devoted to cider, which was a cool feature I thought. Prices seem standard and while the grocery might be able to beat them by a few cents they can’t beat them on the selection. Great shop and I’ll be back for sure.“
