“U Select is an upmarketed grocery store chain evolved from the local CR Vanguard supermarket chain, which still exists. It is associated with Tesco from UK, so you can find inexpensive beers imported from Tesco (UK and Europe) here from time to time. In addition it also sells selected brands of Japanese sakes and Korean Makgeollis so it's worth a visit for us local beer hunters once in a long while.“

“Another HK grocery store chain review, but this one is a bit different. As the name suggests, this franchise specializes in all things Thai, from food stuff to cosmetics and healthcare products. Beer selections vary from branch to branch, some may just have a couple of Thai import brands plus a few local craft brews, while others may have a good ranges of local craft brands (e.g. Young Master, City Brew and Tai Wai Beer; approx. 15 - 20 titles), most are the latest stuff so it's worth take a look and shop if you bump into an AbouThai shop. I am more interested in their extensive range of Thai foods though, from instant noodles to frozen seafoods, which are not seen previously and prices are fairly reasonable, which is good news for Thai foodies like me and hopefully they will get more exotic Thai beers on the shelves soon.“

“One of the many grocery store chains in HK for Japanese food and snacks, their branches are mostly located within the shopping malls of public housing estates. Their beers are Japanese macros but they have a good selection of sakes and non-sake based plum wines (umeshu), so if you are into these sorts of stuffs it's worth a visit, especially when they are on sales. Food-wise, they also sell snacks and noodles from Taiwan, and their price can be cheaper than The 759 Store sometimes. Take a peek if you bump into one.“

“A new fastfood chain specialized in, you guess it, hot dogs. Bringing this up because they do offer their own brews to go with the food, albeit contract-brewed by the local Heroes Beer. Currently there are just a couple of canned IPAs (West Coast and Hazy) but with the popularity grows, hopefully there will be more. Shop-wise, they are mostly for take-outs and there are at most a couple of small table for quick stand-up meals. Food-wise they offer a wide variety of hot dogs from the traditional ketchup & mustard to many fusion styles which kinda cater local palates. Tried a few of them for take-out and they tasted quite nice at a fairly reasonable price. It'll be much better to have hot off the stove dogs enjoyed right there with a cold IPA on hand. That will happen soon!“

“A new convenience store chain run as a non-profit organization, this place's forte is not beers so don't go there specifically for anything craft or fancy, but they do sell some odds and ends once in a while which I can't find in major supermarket chains. Their snacks and food selections are more interesting, though. They also perform good deeds regularly to local communities, which is something I applaud.“

“British ciders and beers and a pretty reasonable price if that is what you are looking for. Not much else, but worth it for the good prices.“

“Since this is a British chain, you'll find lots of British beer here (e.g., Oakham). Nothing special if you're from Europe, but the prices are decent, at $40 HK per bottle; they also have 3 for 2 deals which make it a better deal. If you're seeking out some UK beers, might be worth a look. Otherwise, keep walking.“

“The few 7-Elevens I've been in throughout HK haven't demonstrated much of a beer selection beyond Guinness Extra Stout, Brooklyn Lager, and maybe another. Nothing doing here these days.“

“A chain of nostalgic, throwback Hong Kong mom-and-pop stores, they sell a variety of eye-opening old style snacks, drinks, toys and all things 1960's and 70's. Beer selection is small but steadily growing. They have their own brand of wheat beer (brewed by Mak's) as well as other selected local / regional craft beers. Love visiting Mei Lok not just for beer, but for all the great memories it brings to my childhood.“

“This semi-upmarket snack / grocery chain has grown in popularity over the years to cater the big-spending Mainland customers. For all the tasty snacks and sweets they sell from Japan, Korea and Europe, they also import interesting beers and sakes frequently at a competitive discounted prices. While its selection may not be as comprehensive as the 759 Store, the discount and the oddities are sometimes worth the return trips once in a while.“

“The other major convenience store chain in Hong Kong, Circle K (or "OK" to the locals) do have exotic finds, through the stocks are not as frequent as 7-Eleven. When they do, the choice is quite unexpected and sometimes amazing for us beerspotters. Check often cross your fingers for some surprises!“

“The branches of these wine store chain are mostly located in Yuen Long and Sheung Shui. They carries a wide varieties of fine wine but they also have a small but solid selection of popular craft beers and sakes. Prices are competitive, some are actually cheaper than big stores like YATA, so I will check back from time to time.“

“Like the famous 759 Store, this food store chain props up in just about every bust district across the city. Initially only selling Japanese and Korean snacks and groceries, now it stocks exotic and inexpensive European beers from Lithuania. Not top stuff but prices are very agreeable. Let’s hope they get more different beers fro the good of local beer hunting! “

More newly-established grocery store chain to cash in the Mainland Chinese tourists, this ’Mart’ has only three shops scattering across Hing Kong Island and Kowloon, all of them are located at the hearts of the busiest shooping districts.

Like Tasty Mart, this store specializes in imported exotic snacks / foodstuffs (mostly from Japan and South Korea), wines and beers. Price not that cheap, but the selection are good and most are mid-to-high quality stuff.

The selection of beers and sakes are fair enough, which is exotic and sometimes surprising- the damned Karuizawa brand for example - all sold at regular store price, so there’s not much bargain to shop here, and for exotic beer and sake watch, this is a fair place to go.“

46 /100 NO. 212, 2/F, PHASE I, CHOI MING SHOPPING CENTRE, TSEUNG KWAN O
“Looks like another recently-established grocery store chain to cash in the Mainland Chinese tourism boom, but actually this ’Mart’ has been around for more than four years. Just don’t really notice that, maybe because it doesn’t have a cool bilingual name to it. It has more than a dozen shops scattering across HK, almost all of them are located at the hearts of the Links shopping centres. This store specializes in Korean and Japanese snacks / foodstuffs, wines and beers. Unlike other stores, this one is adventerous in sourcing beer from contries you never fought you’ll get in this city never once in your life, so that’s good. Price is cheap and reasonable. While the snacks are pretty much for the neighbourly tourists, I drop by frequently to check out any exotic and unheard of beers. That’s how you treasure-hunt beers in this city. “

“After seeing M&S carrying beers in SoHo, looks like they finally realized there’s a sizable population in this city wants more than just gourmet food and wines. This is a very convinent location - certainly much more convinent than SoHo for me - to shop M & S beers. The beers are located at an unassuming corner inside the foodstore, with roughly 10+ selections ranging from English ales, Belgian blonds to ciders and perries. All contract-brewed. The 500ml bottles seems pricey, but from what I saw they were popular with tourist, expatriates and bar goers. With all the fine gourmet food here, I will try out its beer line up one by one! Let’s hope more selection will come soon.“

“For the most part,I really like 7-elevens in Hong Kong;hard working people doing a very good job ! 7-elevens can be the size of my bedroom closet or the size of a one bedroom apartment with the beer selections matching the size. The important thing here is that you can find some really good craft beers in these stores with competitive prices to the bigger food chain stores. “

“Backlog rate from my travels in Asia. 7-Eleven in both HK and Singapore for the most part stock craft beer, and sometimes quite a lot of it. And by craft, I mean readily available good beers that are exported across the world like Hoegaarden, Asahi Black, Franziskaner, Paulaner. Occasionally I was able to find a local bottled beer in a 7 such as the eponymous "Hong Kong Beer", which was very bad. Maybe there are more local HK beers available and perhaps better Taiwanese and Japanese craft beers.“

46 /100 SUITE B, 8/F, PAK SIK WAREHOUSE NO. 2, 15-29 WO SHUI STREET, FOTAN, SHATIN

The 3rd major supermarket chain in HK, always in the shadows of ParkNShop and Wellcome despite the deep pockets from its sugar daddy China Resources (hence the ’CR’ in its name), so they focus their business on a more grassroot level, with many of their stores located at public housing estates as well as some less glamorous shopping districts.

Beer wise, its selection is also quite different from the other two majors, with exclusive and cheap imported beers from Holland, South Korea, Mainland China and Taiwan. The lineup is modest but new stuffs arrive from time to time. A fair place to check out dodgy Asian beers once in a while.“

42 /100 SUITE 3A, 3/F, EDWICK INDUSTIAL CENTRE, 4-30 LEI MUK ROAD, KWAI CHUNG

Another newly-established grocery store chain to cash in the Mainland Chinese tourism boom, this ’Mart’ has only half a dozen shops scattering across HK, all of them are located at the hearts of the busiest shooping districts.

Unlike the well-established PrizeMart franchise, this store specializes in imported exotic snacks / foodstuffs (mostly from Thailand and South Korea), wines and beers. Price is considerably cheaper than the local supermarket chains, but taste-wise, let’s just say many of their snacks are not my thing. I prefer the wholesome North American goodies from PrizeMart :P

As for beers, its selection is few and far between, but is exotic and sometimes surprising - from the previously damn expensive lineups from Japan’s Abashiri Drafts, to Portuguese Super Bock beers - all sold at half the supermarket price, so its bargain attractiveness is here, and for local exotic beer watch, this is not a bad place at all.“

As I’ve said in the review of Organic Bliss (Causeway Bay), beer hunting in HK is an adventure requires your stamina, patience and a little imagination. If you are not one of those beer snobs who drink nothing but the most exquisite and overhyped craft beers, and if you love to try beers with an open mind, then in every place, every shop in every corner of this city will bring you nice surprises. Prize Mart is one of them.

This ever-growing retail store chain specializes in bulk-selling imported American and European foodstuffs at a very competitive near-whiolesale price for the local customers as well as Mainland Chinese shoppers who come to stock cheap, quality ’gwei-lo’ grocery and bring them back home on the same day. Like the 759 Stores, Prize Mart stock imported European beers you won’t find anywhere else in HK, mostly selections in six-packs by Bavarian Brewery of Holland. Affordable and in some case, good quality, and with new selection come in from time to time, this retail chain represents another hunting ground for beers you never thought you’ll encounter let alone taste them, and oh, did I forget to say the non-beer American grocery imports are of pretty good quality as well?“

“I don’t have much to say about "7" as convenience stores as it is around your corner all over the world. In Hong Kong, though, this is the store chain where they import some rarely seen imported beers from Japan, South East Asia and Europe. Such as seasonal Happoshus from Asahi, fruit beers from several Taiwanese breweries, rare macro malt liquors, and German Oktoberfestbiers, and so on. I always keep an eye on it, as you never really know what they will bring and it’s always fun to try out these new odds and ends!“

Aeon (Various Locations) (Grocery Store)
VARIOUS LOCATIONS
“Stumbled acrossed this place while visiting a friend nearby, I didn’t realize this Aeon store was opened nearly 6 months ago. Its 3rd floor supermarket is very spacey, and like Aeon’s Tai Wo Hau store, this place has some unexpected finds I couldn’t get anywhere, such as Nepal Ice and GB Frederic’s Ginger. Moreover, the British ales sold here are less expensive than those shops in Central. This means, I’ll back soon!“

“The locally famous 759 Store is everywhere and now landed near my home. Ingeneral, 759 is mostly packed with bargained priced Japanese and Korean foodstuffs. However, they often stock inexpensive beers from all over the world, mostly from Spain, Holland, Korea and Japan. Stocks comes and goes quite fast, but what a good way to get some exotic beers and that’s all it matters!“

“This Superstore’s beer selection is almost compararble to those of Market Place by Jason’s. In fact, it features some odd selections from Europe and England otherwise not available in Market Places. Never expected a decent beer store right in the middle of an otherwise beer-indifferent residental district such as Hung Hom, nevertheless I’ve got another good place to shop beer whenever I pass by here again.“

“Made a visit here for its grand opening in Tsuen Wan. The beer fridge looks small, yet its beer selection is nearly the same as its New Town Plaza branch in Sha Tin so I can pick up some stuff here after work. its adjacent supermarket features a wide variety of tasty, freshly made Japanese snacks, which will go down well with the cool beers. :)“

“"Taste", a deluxe grocery superstore located within the plush Festival Walk shopping mall right next to the busy Kowloon Tong MTR station, is ParkNShop’s answer to rival Wellcome’s Jasons Food & Living. It is very convenient for underground commuters for sure. Its huge floor space means relatively relax shopping even at rush hours. Its beer selection is clamped at a small corner along with the wines and champagnes. The choices are mostly macros, quite similar to Fanling’s ParkNShop Superstore, but some odd choices are exclusive here such as Arcobrau Zwickel, and it adds new products from England from time to time. For the city dwellers in Kowloon, this is a pretty good place for your daily macro needs. If I need to get those odd or new items, I’ll come here for sure. Otherwise, it’s shopping as usual as Shatin and Fanling as they are closer and good enough for me.“

“One will never expect to find such a variety of top quality beers at reasonable price at a frontier town like Fanling. I don’t need to travel far to get my favourites like Leffe, Urquell and Paulaner, plus some exclusive selection from Belgium (such as Blanche de Namur, Brussels Fruit Beers) and Germany (such as Flensburger)! Yay!“
