Kumazawa Brewery Trattoria Mokichi

We came with kids and spent the first part of our time downstairs in the "kids room." That’s awesome because it puts the noisy guys in an area with toys that won’t bother everyone else, but the problem is that this area seems like an afterthought. As such there was an odd odor in the air like there was a moisture problem. Initially service was a challenge because the lack of a bell, but soon the staff was watching us attentively. Later, when the kids left, we moved upstairs and found it to be a lovely space. We mostly drank pitchers of the Bitter which I found to be really light and refreshing. We also had a Pilsner which didn’t really distinguish itself (at least with me at that moment) and then I had a glass of the Weiss which I thought was a great beer - cloudy and slightly fruity. The food was also good, with the wood-fired pizzas coming in with a good taste. I can’t say anything stood out too much, but it was good. Too bad this place is in never-never land!

Beautiful place with good food. Beers are in excellent condition, but rather sloppily poured by disinterested part-timers. They only had the three regulars and one seasonal when we went, which was a bit fewer than I hoped for. Pils was supreme. I like this place, but would probably go to their Fujisawa bar first, as it has twice as many beers on tap (though much worse service!)

Restaurant which is part of the Shonan brewery. Serves wood fired pizzas, bratwurst dishes and tasty Italian salads and sides, all alongside the brewery beer list. Food is very good and thank god the pizzas are decent sized and not tiny like most pizzas in Japan. Beer choices cover about 5 of the breweries options and you can also ask for bottles from the counter shop in the lobby. Altogether it’s a great combination of good food and good beer, with excellent attentive service and a really nice rustic wooden restaurant location.

The ambiance at this place is a amazing. There is an all natural bakery attached the brewery as you walk in. Then you come to a lovely garden and the patio for one of the restaurants. That restaurant (Trattoria) focuses on Italian fare and is a multileveled old house with a cozy basement that has cool wooden tables and books on beer in English/Japanese/German. All of their beers, plus seasonals are on tap, plus about half a dozen draft sakes they make. Food is reasonable priced and good quality. The staff can be impatient, but the food comes out quit quickly. There is also a childerns play room upstairs. The other restaurant is a classy Japanese place with prices going up accordingly. Its interior is dark wood and very stylish. The brewery puts on events throughout the year including an all you can eat and drink Ocktoberfest, complete with Jazz bands and locals selling arts and crafts in the garden. A very very cool place. Kagawa station is a couple of stops from Chigasaki Station. From Kagawa station turn right and walk along the road. You will eventually cross the railway tracks. Keep walking on the right hand side of the road and you will see signs for the brewery. It is about a 10 min walk from the station
