COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Pasteurised.
NOTE: The Cask version has a separate listing.
Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.
We like to think that the dark ruby colour and the full bodied malt flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt and Black Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, and First Gold

Bottle. Dark Ruby in colour. Very Malty; roast malts, caramel, toffee, hint of coffee. Fruity; dark fruits, raisins, berry fruits. Rather vinous and syrupy. Hoppy; slight herbal hops. Very sweet malty and fruity throughout. Decent. (2010-09)

Dobre tresciwe i ladnie wygladajace Ale. Piana ladna kremowa ale srednio trwala. Kolor ciemno rubinowy. Zapach orzechow laskowych i wloskich. Smak orzechowo daktylowy. Sporo goryczki i chmielnosci w stylu brytyjskim oczywiscie.

Wygląd: barwa głęboko miedziana, do czerwonej, klarowna do zgaszonej. Piana w kolorze ecru / jasno beżowym, drobno pęcherzykowa, obfita i trwała. Ładnie oblepia szkło.

Smak: słodkawy, wyraźnie estrowy, nieco alkoholowy, z posmakami słodowymi (karmel, tosty, melano), ze zdecydowaną chmielową kontrą. Goryczka, choć początkowo niezbyt wyrazista okazuje się wyczuwalna, drażniąca i dosyć długa. Średnia pełnia, umiarkowane do niskiego wysycenie i słodowo- goryczkowy finisz. Zdecydowanie spodziewałem się więcej.

Maker: Broughton Ales, Biggar, Scotland *** Beer: Broughton Black Douglas (bottled, 500ml) *** Style: Premium Bitter/ESB *** ALC.VOL.: 5.2% *** "Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders. We like to think that the dark ruby colour and the full bodied malt flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight." [brewery notes] *** Colour: Dark mahogany, reddish tint. Medium-sized, fluffy light beige head. Nose: Caramel, mild roasted malts, some flowery hops, dark fruit. Texture: Medium body, hardly watery at all. Medium carbonation. Taste: Surprisingly bitter at the start, with bittering hops balancing the caramel, licorice and roasted malt notes. Hoppier still in the middle, together with chocolate malts. Finish is bitter, hoppy, again set against roasted malts. Dry. Aftertaste of hops, even pine, some coffee. Impressions: More like a Schwarzbier/black lager than a Premium ESB, this surprisingly hoppy dark beer delivers powerful bitter notes, only muted caramel and roasted malts. Highly quaffable, fresh, the third winner in a row from Broughton Ales.
