COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition.

This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus Classic.

The 75cl bottles are closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. This exceptional ale ages well, developing a refined complexity and intense aromas. With powerful notes of roasted malts, caramel and plums, its surprisingly soft and fruity aroma combines a warm roundness with a refreshing taste. An imperial brew to cherish and enjoy in moderation.

Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2021 2019 vintage. Pours dark brown, with reddish hints if seen through light. About one finger of slightly off-white head. Decent retention, especially for the abv. Aroma shows a base of sweet malts: caramel, light chocolate, but also a roasted hint. A touch of fruitiness (figs?). A warming feel. Overall a fine/soft kind of aroma, especially for such high abv. Taste feels a bit more potent. Nice malts complexity: caramel, light chocolate, light roasted hints. Dried/dark fruits. There is a warming, slight port-like feel, but the alcohol is perfectly hidden. The beer is overall obviously sweet but always in very good balance, thanks to strenght and to a touch of earthiness in the finish. The aftertaste is a clean, lightly fruity one. Dense in body as obvious, perhaps not so much for the abv; light to medium, delicate carbonation. Overall, a semi-thick but soft, nicely creamy mouthfeel. I was maybe expecting something more complex/rich, but this beer finds excellent balance and drinkability for such a strong beer, and feels like a fine, soft strong ale.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2021 It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is medium. Malty rich aromas with strong dark fruits. It has caramel notes with plums and dried cherries. There is some spice in support. It also has light perfumy notes in the background as well. The malt flavors are highlighted by deep caramel and a bit of bread. There are plums and dried cherries with a bit of a molasses like element to it. There is a bit of spice well in the background. It has a medium full body with a dry finish in spite of the initial sweetness. Overall, for such a strong alcohol beer, the alcohol is pleasant and warming without any harsh alcohols. A good combination of flavors from the malt, hops and yeast.
