COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2020 330 mL bottle, from the brewery. Woah! The smokiness! How would this go with smoky rashers? This is an interesting taste, not one that could be sessionable I'd imagine. Decent. Not as good as the Flat White, I think. Building up to the iStout, but that might have to wait until tomorrow.

hman43 (3700) - Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA - NOV 23, 2019
UPDATED: NOV 23, 2019 It pours dark brown with a brown head. Head retention is low. The initial aromas are of smoke and chocolate. There is a hint of cherry in the background. It has a combination of smoke, chocolate, and roast. The smoke is a little bit more prominent that the chocolate which is a little bit more than the roast. There is a slight hint of cherry in the background. It has a medium body with a fair amount of carbonation. Overall, it has a well balance combination of malts with slight dark fruits from the esters.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2019 This is a backlog rating from 2011 from a bottle shared by Tmoney99, from notes. When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again or I just didn't get back to my notes because of my technology at the time. Words to describe this beer are roasted malts, dark chocolate, woody smoked malts, nice smoked character.

ANZUShophunter (2343) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - JUL 27, 2019
UPDATED: JUL 27, 2019 From bottle (BB Aug'20) in porter glass. Pours dark brown w/thick 2-finger tan head, aroma of smoked malt & leather. Nice choc and licorice undertones, quite tasty, finish a bit more sticky than most porters.

sulawang (1712) - - JUN 5, 2019
UPDATED: JUN 5, 2019 Bottle from 2012, cellared for 9 years. Attack: fizzy crisp, incoming deep dark malt Mids: heavy deep roast malt, lvl5-sweetness, smoked wood, ash, soy sauce, molasses Finish: lingering bitter roast malt Overall: a good measure of smoke that is enjoyable but gets too heavy one glass in. Still good though.

UPDATED: APR 12, 2019 Taste of Roast Bacon & smoked fish on the nose. Elegant on the palate, close to offensive on the nose. Fun to have with the crewsdem to challenge noses and pallets alike. Deserty smoked jam and spices for miles.

BitterChalice25 (259) - - APR 12, 2019
UPDATED: APR 12, 2019 Super smoky, burnt malt aroma. Some sweetness, but dry finish. Smoke flavour is a bit overwhelming for me.
