COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco’s celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer, in one of the world’s smallest and most traditional breweries, since 1975. Our barleywine-style ale, the first of its kind in modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavour that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top-fermenting yeast, fresh whole hops, and "first wort", the richest runnings of a thick all-malt mash. Old Foghorn is "dry hopped" in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitiness, and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world. A ruby red ale with little carbonation and a warm finish.

chinhaez (155) - Ouray, Colorado, USA - SEP 16, 2021
UPDATED: SEP 16, 2021 bottle. medium brown pour with a beige head that has good retention. The aroma features brown sugar, toffee, and wet soil. The taste moderately bitter with c hops ( I guess), also in the flavor I get dark fruits, raisins and dates, and earthy-bitter hops. The palate is a bit lighter than I prefer, but still quite accommodating. Overall: Decent, paired well with some extra toasty cheez-it.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2021 This is a nice barley wine beer but there are better examples. It's really bitter and tingy on the tongue. As with a great deal of US beers it's about overload on the ingredients and see what we get. Glad I found a bottle.

bdleedahl (4795) - , Saxony, GERMANY - JUL 9, 2021
UPDATED: JUL 9, 2021 Feels a little aged and oxidized. Otherwise it’s like a light barleywine that you’d find nowadays, but defines the style in terms of the fig flavour. Beer temple ams

Jerseyislandbeer (3514) - JERSEY - OCT 11, 2020
UPDATED: OCT 11, 2020 Old notes from 09-07-14. 330ml bottle, ABV 9.4. Pours a light brown with a off white foamy head. Aromas & tastes of grapes, figs, dates, candy, caramel, touch of cinnamon & very present strong alcohol. Might be very well made, but lost on me as I think this is one of my least favourite styles of beer.

jybi (1866) - Nouméa, NEW CALEDONIA - OCT 8, 2020
