COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A coffee ale with a touch of cream. Calm Before the Storm came from a quest for a warm weather alternative to our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter. Like its more robust cousin, we infuse a punch of flavor using cold brewed Caffé Calabria coffee and a hint of vanilla. But this time, we added it to a lighter-bodied golden cream ale. The end result is a surprisingly bright, coffee-forward beer that’s perfectly refreshing. Previously listed at 6.2% abv.

Keg at BrewDog Soho in 2015. Deep copper with a white head. Aroma is big coffee and vanilla, with some caramel and toasted malt notes. Flavour is quite sweet, which is probably to be expected from the style. I didn’t really like it all that much, which pretty much makes it the most enjoyable cream ale I’ve ever had.

355ml bottle. Pours clear golden amber with an off white head. Aroma: coffee dominates, also malty caramel, vanilla & cream. Taste: light to moderate sweet, creamy malts, coffee cream soda, vanilla, biscuits. Light to medium body, soft carb, sweety creamy coffee finish. Enjoyed this one, my favourite of this style so far

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2017 Tap, ADT. Mostly clear yellow gold with a creamy white head. Didn't read the description of this so was a little surprised by the coffee and vanilla notes. Tasty.

Sample @ Stockholm B&WF 2017. This is one weird beer. Clear amber with a white head. Just as expected by an ale. But aroma and taste is full of coffee, cream and sugar and vanilla with low hop influence. Especially the aftertaste is just as after you've had a cup of Java... Fun, but not high drinkability...

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2017 This beer has grown on me. It's a great complement to Victory at Sea. It's coffee forward, with noticeable smoke in the nose and the beginning. The cream and any underlying malty flavors make up the after taste. It's a shame they don't sell this more often - it's very unique.

12oz bottle: This one pours a clear, amber color. There was about a finger of an off white head that didn’t linger or leave any lacing. Lighter nose. Definitely a whiff of coffee. Not too much else getting by the coffee. Decent enough tasting. Medium bodied caramel malts with a bit of coffee flavor. Maybe a hint of vanilla. OK, but nothing to make it memorable.

Love the artwork on the label (bonus pts), clear golden, loads of vanilla in the nose, not much else. Hmmmm, I get vanilla, but not much else, a bit sweet, creamy however doesn’t really strike me as a complex beer with layers, just a vanilla flavored cream ale. I don’t get much (if any) coffee except a bit in the follow and aftertaste. One of the misses in a plethora of hits from Ballast Point.

Bottle. Light gold pour with a white head. Apparently sometimes putting lipstick on a pig does help. I don’t like cream ales at all, but this was tolerable due to a nice dose of coffee and vanilla.

This was terrible. For me, at least. Vanilla is a great flavor, I love vanilla, but in a light bodied beer it basically sucks, it’s too dominant. Add cream and it’s undrinkable. Did not finish.

This is perhaps the only cream ale I’ve had that was any good. Nice afomas of vanilla, light coffee, some milk/cream and nuts. The flavors are along the same lines but a little more muted. The body is pretty thin (as expected) with a slightly bitter finish. It pours a bright golden hue with a frothy white head.
