UPDATED: JAN 7, 2022 Bottled in Nov 2021. Enjoyed on New Year’s Eve - Pours black with a dense, one finger dark tan head. It has a very rich aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and oaky bourbon. It has an intense, malt led flavor with chocolate, bourbon, coffee, oak, and alcohol. Superbly balanced. This is very full bodied and delicious, a world class beer that lives up to the hype.

UPDATED: AUG 9, 2021 RBSG 2017. Pours black with a nice tan head. A really nice balance of bourbon, roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. Pleasant vanilla sweetness along with some toffee and molasses. A nice undertone of black cherry, date, and sweet berry. Just a touch of bitterness on the finish along with a touch of warming bourbon. Well done.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2021 12 oz. bottle from Ridgewood Wine & Beer, Raleigh, NC (bottled October 16, 2018). Pour is BLACK with a short cinnamon brown head. Aroma is incredible with notes of espresso, star anise, chocolate, dark fruit, and bourbon. Taste features prominent dark cocoa and coffee upfront but layers of vanilla, coconut, and oak take this to another level. Added on the finish is a welcome amount of warmth and hints of licorice and tobacco. Stunning in every way!

Silphium (3721) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - SEP 29, 2020
UPDATED: SEP 29, 2020 Older rating of the 2018 version. Deep murky brown-black body, thin, dissipating ruddy brown head. Inky nose with molasses, prune, coffee, and roasted malts. Sharp and somewhat tangy with bourbon, oak, and boozy heat. Body initially sharply boozy, subsiding to raisin, charred malts, chocolate liqueur, coffee beans, and bourbon. Marshmallowy-chewy, slick and oily. Exceptional.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2020 Pours a thick, oily black, with very small, tan head that dissipates rapidly. Aromas of bourbon, dark fruit, coffee, licorice. Flavors follow, along with chocolate, some caramel, a touch of leather. Soft, sweet mouthfeel.

UPDATED: JUL 14, 2020 Bottled on 10/16/2018 - The aroma is a little fig/raisins, some soy. Pours black with minimal dark brown head and very good lacing. The taste is a slight bitter, with caramel and slight bourbon overtones, long lasting. The body is full, the texture creamy, the carbonation average and the finish long. Glad I finally took the time to appreciate this fine stout.

Strong bitterness, decent balance. It's a big boozy beer but its done well.
