COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Here at Cantillon, we’re no strangers to experimentation. In the early 50’s, Paul Cantillon tried blending Lambic and oranges. The result wasn’t exactly spectacular. Fruit lambic with citrus (mostly oranges). The refermentation in the bottles was so strong, that the brewery workers at the time were forced to sprint past the bottles through the cellar in order to avoid being hit by popping corks and drenched in beer. Our grandfather Marcel Cantillon loved this story, and often loved to tell it to us as children. So 70 years later, inspired by our great-grandfather, we’ve made a special blend of Lambic and citrus (a blend featuring mostly oranges) in his honor. The acidity of the beer and the fruit and the freshness of the citrus in contrast to the bitterness of their zests makes for a particularly thirst-quenching Zwanze. The name Parasol will remind my fellow Belgians of a certain age of the orange-flavored soft-drink of the same name we used to drink back in the day.

UPDATED: OCT 18, 2021 Surprised at the relatively low scores here. This is low key one of the better Cantillon beers I've had. Signature funk and acidity without being too funky. Super easy drinking actually, maybe it's underappreciated for that. I know I wanted more when it was gone, and the kumquat and citrus really shines, but doesn't overpower. 4.4-4.5.

Alengrin (9649) - Gent, BELGIUM - SEP 30, 2021
UPDATED: SEP 30, 2021 This year’s Zwanze, quite surprisingly an orange lambic – I have wondered for so many years why citrus fruits are never used in lambic and had to wait till Tilquin’s mandarin lambic of earlier this year to satisfy my curiosity, so to find out what Cantillon makes of this idea was a very exciting idea, making me anticipate this Zwanze perhaps even more than the previous ones. Served from tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas with all the accompanying show (and crowdedness) adding to the experience, I guess. Off-white, medium thick, moussy and stable head over a misty ‘old golden’ beer with ochre-ish tinge. Highly unusual aroma: orange water, lemon bread and mandarin peel as expected, but also Napoleon candy and even urinal cake or lemon-scented hand soap, bizarrely hovering over aspects of damp hay, bergamot, dry sherry, minerals, armpit sweat (especially when warming up) and old peanuts. Crisp onset, lots of rather sharp and fizzy effervescence, minerally, working well with sour apple and gooseberry aspects – and with the orange, which comes up quite strongly briefly after the first stage, blending with the lambic’s own sourness into a complex of not just orange, but lime and even slight bergamot. Supple bready core, lactic acidity, sharpish sourness and woody accents, but then the orange returns, with an ethereal retronasal ‘agrumes’ effect – and effectively making the finish taste like actual (unsweetened) orange juice, even a bit artificial in the end (the hand soap or lemon candy effect again), clashing a bit with the lambic’s own character. Some orange peel bitterness lingers in the finish. This is quite spectacular – the orange is much more dominant than I imagined, with even a bottled orange juice and orange candy effect to it; very bizarre, but enjoyable for one glass and certainly different from what I was expecting. Zwanze turns out to be a real surprise this year!

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2021 From tap at Ammutsøn during Zwanze Day 2021. Orange, clear body, with a small, white head. Aroma of orange, citrus, lime, some apple, slight funk. Tastes quite similar, with a more limey character. Medium, slick mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes dry, zesty, citric, limey. Very nice, while a bit strange. Almost no lambic character, citric, limey notes everywhere, drinks a bit like a (not too sweet) lemonade. Quaffable of course, but I was expecting a bit more. Propably much more interesting in a few years. Score: 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 15
