The impact of homebrewers on the American craft beer industry has been immense. The comfort level and lack of inhibitors provided by a domestic brewing environment fosters a near limitless brand of experimentation, allowing homebrewers to push te beer envelope to its breaking point. Many of the professional brewing world’s best recipes--from West Coast IPAs to imperial stouts and even sours--began as homespun standouts so spectacular they had to be unleashed on the world in order to improve it.

With this in mind, each year we hold an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned homebrewing competition, the champion of which gets their recipe brewed and distributed nationwide by Stone. This year’s winner, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional apalate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper, and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the sout, as our collaborators from Baja California, Cervezeria Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice, and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking but thriving at an all-time high.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2021 Tap, Sharkey’s Radford. Pours very dark brown, clear. Some lacing, beige head disappears fast. Aroma is subdued. Roast mainly. Taste is complex mix of things …. The ingredients are used judiciously, nothing is out of balance. Pretty darned tasty, and I rarely like high alcohol beers. Back end is sweet as expected … I assume they added lactose to balance it out (I normally dislike beers worth added lactose). Pretty good … not a beer I’ll have a second right away but tasty.

marcodelrio1610 (48) - Torino, ITALY - JUN 10, 2021
UPDATED: JUN 13, 2021 Pours dark, almost black, with thick caramelly creamy retentive foam over shaded textures with columns of bubbles. On top, cocoa and caramel. Up front, hot pepper and dark coffee come in strong with nutmeg and spices on the splashes. Vanilla and milk are firm on the drink with pepper and straw that echoes the devastating cinnamon taste in the back of the throat. Body is round, easy to drink. Aftertaste is pasty, festive and long lasting. So many flavors!

ThreeCats (1210) - CZECH REPUBLIC - JUN 3, 2021
UPDATED: JUN 3, 2021 Black with a dark mocha head. Aroma of roast, chocolate and hot sauce. Further aroma is nutmeg and something I can't quite place but that reminds me of Christmas drinks.. maybe allspice? Taste has the same note, but it comes out more like ginger snap cookies. Roast, chocolate, warm alcohol in stomach. Very different. Good dessert beer

BenOver (435) - SLOVENIA - APR 30, 2021
UPDATED: APR 30, 2021 Poirs pitch black with an aggressive top, beoge colored. Aroma is superb - cinnamon, coffee, chocholate, caramel, vanilla, nutty scent in the back. Just - wow. Taste is very full and intensive, pronounced carbonation gives a strong kick. A bit flatter beer would be better with these flavours and body. Nevertheless, a full-bodied, very well balanced between coffee and bitter finish. The bitterness takes over at the end but it is a super Imperial Stout.
