COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Take your time with this luxury ale. It is large and takes a while to slow down. You might be unsinkable but if you are not careful you might find your self decommissioned. Roasted malts and cacao nibs bring a complexity which you might not remember if you have too many of these attempting to raise its mysteries from the depths.

cmacklin (3166) - Lethbridge, Alberta, CANADA - JAN 7, 2022
UPDATED: JAN 7, 2022 473ml can. Pours an opaque black with a small, creamy, long lasting, tan head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, licorice, earth and coffee. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, licorice, dark chocolate, date and coffee in a dry, mild bitter, warming booze finish. Full body with a creamy, smooth, soft, oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty and enjoyable. Would love to try an aged version.

pictoman (3080) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 27, 2020
UPDATED: DEC 27, 2020 Poured from 473mL can. Black with full tan head. Mild licorice, subtle alcohol heat permeates, mild roast malt, cacao nib, tarry texture. Unabashedly big, but with a little refinement, could be excellent. As it is, still needs a bit of work.

Lubiere (19735) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 13, 2020
UPDATED: NOV 13, 2020 A deep dark stout with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, bitter chocolate with coffee grind, musty character, alcohol warmth, pleasant. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, light vanilla, light coffee, alcohol warmth, very nice. On tap at brewery.

stantheman (2015) - British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 15, 2020
UPDATED: FEB 15, 2020 On tap at the Alibi Room in Vancouver. A black beer with a tan head and a faint roasted malt nose. Sweet on the palate. There are some dark flavors here, but muddled and indistinct. A bit of roasted malt, a bit of cocoa and/or coffee, maybe a trace of licorice. Okay.

Gerbeer (5947) - Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 4, 2020
UPDATED: JAN 4, 2020 473 ml can. Pours a very dark brown with full tannish head. Aromas of fruity alcohol and mild roasted malts. Flavors of same with a bit if sweet vanilla. Almost perfumey on the finish. Hot and odd. Needs a bit of work.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2019 Sort of tarry, bit of alcohol. Light choc but not great, sort of messy.

mcberko (34280) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 30, 2019
UPDATED: NOV 30, 2019 On tap at Container, pours a motor oil black with a small tan head. Nose is heavy, with alcohol, roasted malt, and some cocoa - seems a little chaotic. Flavour is big and brutal - with intense roasted malt, gentle alcohol, some husky earthy notes, and a hint of espresso. Not the most refined or elegant impie, but it’s balanced reasonably well and quite tasty overall. This is good.

DeanF (9135) - New Westminster, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 24, 2019
UPDATED: NOV 24, 2019 Very faint licorice aroma, has soft blackish brown body with medium minimal foam. Flavour is heavy licorice and booze, not necessarily rough but certainly heavy. The alcohol is still pretty well hidden though. Mouthfeel is nice in that way, there's no cloying character but it is thick and heavy. It's okay for a big beer but missing some elements to elevate it.

2021-11-10, can from The Gull, North Vancouver, canned 28-Oct-2021, 7-4-8-4-17=40
Roasted malt aroma, and very light bread and yeast. Full bodied, bold roasted malt flavour, burnt sugar, dark caramel, with moderate residual sweetness, a trace of liquorice, and an evident alcohol punch.
Very good also this year.

2020-10-10, can from the brewery,

2020-09-17, on nitro tap at the brewery, 7-4-8-4-17=40
Black colour with compact, large brownish nitro head. I usually hate nitro, but since this is so bold, it still manages to give back; the body is full, the mouthfeel is smooth, big roast, but balanced by some sweetness, toasted hazelnuts, and although this is not BA, it has whiskey notes and strong alcohol.
I would gladly sip on a pint of this.

2020-09-17, draught at the brewery, 7-4-8-4-16=39
Black colour with compact brownish head. Big roast character, some residual sweetness to balance it, the alcohol can be perceived, but it's a solid one.
Very good.

2019-11-22, draught at the brewery, 7-4-8-3-15=37
Black colour. The aroma is on the mild side, light bread and some roasted malts. Good body, although we are getting used to thicker beers; it has a good roasted malt flavour, dark chocolate, moderate sweetness, and a quite strong alcohol presence. Good, I think I'll get some cans…
