ClarkVV (9063) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - FEB 3, 2018
3 Liter 2015 vintage, drunk 9/20/17.
Deep boysenberry-to-cranberry body shows good clarity, leaving the enormous amount of sediment behind (pours on the last third of the bottle inevitably had sediment mixed in creating a very cloudy, soupy looking pour). Pink-violet-tinged head atop shows moderate retention "to-style".
Wave upon wave of passion fruit pours forth from the glass. Incredibly aromatic and well-integrated, by this time anyway, with the Brett and Lacto that come with it. It "dries" it out and adds mineral and earthy notes to it. Wheat behind it adds cracker and biscuit and stays mostly out of the way. No alcohol or flaw. Wonderfully-done fruit, as always.
In the mouth it's soft, malty, juicy and tropical with tart brett and lightly sour lacto completing the picture. Rich wheat textures, tight carbonation and zesty, juicy, rich passion fruit still tastes every bit as good even at two years of age. Pretty typical De Garde, with strong acidity building up and probably turning off those who don't like heavily sour beers. But man, that passion fruit....

750 ml bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Lools solid; a very cloudy dark apricot that gets brownish and turbid towards the last 25% of the bottle. Head is white and fizzy, and dissipates into very thin lacing fairly quickly. Carbonation is very lively. Smells of passion fruit and pomegranate alongside notes of oak and funk. Tastes like it smells with a tart and overly acidic medium-bodied mouthfeel. Pretty good, but very intense and overrated.
