COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

galinmcmahon (5) - Portland, Or, USA - DEC 27, 2021 does not count
UPDATED: DEC 27, 2021 My all time favorite. I find this to be the perfect dinner porter...not sweet, not hoppy, definitely not bitter. Just a straight up, reliable porter-style beer.

kanaclane (1097) - - DEC 5, 2021

atpsynthase (155) - SINGAPORE - NOV 12, 2021
UPDATED: NOV 12, 2021 12 fl oz bottle from Temple Cellars. Pours a deep very dark brown almost on black; aroma of lots of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, really satisfying taste of coffee, hard water, roasted malts, etc. Mouthfeel super solid. Good to see simplicity in this manner.

BroSpud (2643) - , Massachusetts, USA - SEP 20, 2021
UPDATED: SEP 20, 2021 Multiple tastings from bottle and on tap. Decent enough middle of the road porter. Nothing spectacular but a good safe choice if you are hankering for a porter.

Arbitrage411 (73) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 11, 2021
UPDATED: OCT 12, 2021 Black pour complete opaque except for slight reddish amber highlights while held up to light source. Coca Cola like caramel long lasting head, with sticky lacing and the nose of chocolate and or dark fruits. Fresh scents. Dark cocoa on the tongue. Not bitter. A restrained flavor for a dark beer - taste. Even balance with no overly strong aftertaste. Finish is smooth, medium to light.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2021 I'm not super impressed with this dark beer. Just isn't as good as other porters.

Pershing (759) - Garland, Texas, USA - APR 20, 2021
UPDATED: APR 20, 2021 Dark brown pour with a fast dissipating beige head. No much visual carbonation in the form of tiny bubbles. Earthy aroma with some roasted and black patent malt. Medium body with cocoa and black strap molasses. Lingering bitter finish.

nearbeer (7699) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - MAR 30, 2021
UPDATED: MAR 30, 2021 12 ounce from a variety 12 pack, canned 02/11/21. Deep brown-black pour with a quarter inch spongy foam. Aroma has chocolate, caramel and a touch of coffee. Flavors of the same plus toasted walnut and cream. Near-medium bodied with smooth low-medium fizz. Easy drinking balance.

3.8
MNAle (640) - Minnesota, USA - MAR 19, 2021
UPDATED: MAR 19, 2021 The aroma is a little subdued. It is slightly roasty, dark fruits, and a bit sweet. Color is dark brown and clear with rising bubbles visible with a backlight. The 1 inch head is tan, creamy, and recedes fairly quickly, leaving wall lacing. The lacing breaks up into a lacy appearance on the far side of the glass as you drink. Taste has the roasted malts to the front, backed by earthy dark fruits. Hints of leather. A bright floral sweetness is at the beginning, moderated by mild bittering in the middle and finish. The finish and aftertaste are slightly sweet, with the bittering hops keeping things under control. The beer leaves a pleasant mix of the flavors in your mouth between drinks, ending with the bright floral flavors. The mouthfeel is on-point for the style (that is thin to moderate body) and smooth. Overall, a well-done American porter. Very smooth, tasty, and easy drinking.
