COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Pours a hazy golden orange with a thin white head. Lots of sediment in the pour. Aroma of sweet honey an grapes. Strong alcohol feeling on the palate. Flavors are subdued by the alcohol. Dry finish with a lackluster aftertaste. Reminded me of watered down cheep booze. Not refreshing or enjoyable.

750 ml bottle. Pours with a hazy light copper body. Fine textured white head with good retention and excellent lacing. A lot of effort and trouble went into making this beer which I was eager to try out of curiosity. To my surprise, it’s a pleasant beer in every respect, with a particularly good mouthfeel. Lively, medium-high but soft carbonation. Refreshing, lightly spicy and fruity. .

vtg blackberry log, Bottle with Annie baby in 2010, Pours orange with small to medium top. Aroma of banana bread, sugar, apples, dark grape and toasty hops. Body is medium to fuller. Pretty warming in the stomach/chest. Alright for what it is but they need to make sessionable hoppy beers instead of dumb, weird shit all the time.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Cigarette City. Appearance is cloudy orange with huge amounts of sediment in suspension; 1/2 finger-width white fizzy head with poor retention, decent sparkle, minimal lacing. Aroma is sort of like a wine cooler--a cross between champagne and grape juice. Taste is similar to aroma--not as sweet as a full on Welch’s grape juice but strong grape--some light spiciness, yeast, late grains. Palate is medium bodied with foamy texture, soft carbonation and dry grape finish. Overall, I always give kudos to Dogfish Head for pushing boundaries and I’m sure I would have reached for this in a second 9,000 years ago, but today I have other options I’d prefer.
