Pours cloudy mahogany with nearly zero head. Aroma is smoke and light caramel. Taste is faint caramel, moving to heavy smoke and wood. Finish carries the smoke. A decent rauchbier.

I love smoked beers but this one’s a little off. The smoke quality is nice in part, with a nice smoked wood element, but it is also strongly meaty, with a sausage and bacon thing going on - which isn’t had in itself but it has a slight rancid element that kinda ruins it. Flavor similar, but a somewhat acrid smokiness creeps in, and a vague tartness.

330 ml bottle bought yesterday at Sonoma Cellars in Delavan, WI. I so rarely see truly old or retired beers around here that I didn’t bother to look - hadn’t heard of this anyway and, hey, a smoked beer I haven’t had! Looks like it’s dated 2013 so 3 years which could be anywhere from negligible to ruinous in it’s effect, we’ll see. Sampled at cellar temp in an Andeker stem glass...pours a very murky umber, with a small-to-moderate off-white head that fizzles down to a thin ring quickly...some nice woodsmoke in the nose, a little cheese, and this fairly well tamps down the noticeable oxidization; overall it’s pleasant enough if obviously a bit past due...on the tongue there’s a nice woody, smoky and burnt character as well which carries through to the rather bitter and dry finish; sweetness also, a bit of brown sugar and a touch of raisin and, with some warmth, a bit of chocolate at the end...the oxidation is really not so apparent when tasting, and the body is amazingly full and rounded, though perhaps softer and just a little less carbonated than it would have been fresh. This is no masterpiece, and I doubt it would have been at 3 or 6 months instead of 3 years, but it is quite enjoyable and I’d certainly buy it again if it were made available.

Wonderfully smokey aroma. Smoke continues on the palate, but doesn't overwhelm the overall malt balance. Nice medium dark color. A great exemplar of this style! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Probably a pretty old bottle. Murky cola colored pour with a small off white head. Aroma had nice notes of caramel, sweet fruit, subtle hints of smoke. Flavors were slightly more smoky with nice notes of caramel and candied fruit. Lingering smoke in the finish yet slightly sweet overall. Slick mouthfeel with lightish carbonation. Good chance this is past it’s prime but I dig the smoke nonetheless.
