Alengrin (9649) - Gent, BELGIUM - OCT 16, 2018At Bumb3r in Antwerp. Classic Firestone Walker beer, a winter oatmeal stout, tasted at three years of age. Pale greyish beige, open, regularly ring-shaped ‘head’ on very dark mahogany brown beer, approaching black but with ruddy-bronze edges. Lovely aroma of hazelnut paste, melting black chocolate bars, granola, cocoa, walnut shells, oxidized madera, black peppercorns, dry tea bags, coffee grounds. Sweetish onset, dried figs, raisins, touch apple peel, softish carb, oily mouthfeel though perhaps a bit thinner than expected; pleasant hazelnutty and toffeeish malt body with the expected oatmeal slickness to it, leading a more chocolatey, but also very lightly oxidized character – though the latter in a very elegant, delicious way, adding depth and maturity. Bittersweet finish, smooth and gentle with some leafy-spicy hop bitterness to it which no doubt was more pungent when young. Already a bit thinned, this lacks a little bit in ‘oomph’ for what it is, but it has remained a solid, delicious enough stout for sure.
Bcoble003 (347) - Shreve, Washington, USA - AUG 24, 2018Out of bottle warm. Chocolate notes with a hint of malt. Smells of chocolate honey? Not a bad brew considering it's warm.
