snowcrash000 (1790) - Cologne, GERMANY - DEC 30, 2021UPDATED: DEC 30, 2021 Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity, caramel malt and tropical/citrus hops, with notes of coconut, papaya and grapefruit, as well as just a hint of pine. Taste is a good balance of biscuity, caramel malt and fruity, slightly herbal and resinous hops, with notes of coconut, lychee, papaya, grapefruit and pine. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some coconut, papaya and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
While I think that Sabro is an odd choice for a West Coast IPA and it took a few sips to get used to the flavor profile here, this makes for a pleasant example of the style despite being a bit out of the ordinary, which is not something that I'm opposed to at all, but doesn't work particularly well for me here. I'm neither a big fan of Sabro nor those typical coconut notes, but it's certainly bitter and resinous and I like those herbal, minty notes, which give an interesting twist to this and work well within the framework of the style. Overall, this is a bit unusual and not quite to my personal taste, but still an enjoyable and rather interesting example of the style.
