Skinnyviking (12108) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - DEC 24, 2021UPDATED: DEC 24, 2021 44 cl. can at home, bought at Oelmand, Copenhagen. Low but lasting dark brown fluffy head. Black body. Sweet roasted malt, coffee, caramel bourbon vanilla aroma and flavor with little hops bitterness, low carbonation and a long sweet finish. Nicely balanced with an alcohol level that has been properly disguised by the sweetness of the beer.
Alengrin (9649) - Gent, BELGIUM - NOV 17, 2021UPDATED: NOV 17, 2021 Pastry stout from this progressive German craft brewery, sampled at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest. Mocha-beige, open and loose, large-bubbled and unstable head, jet black robe. Aroma of bitter chocolate, treacle, toffee, chestnut sauce, fig jam, coffee cream, hazelnut oil. Sweet onset, candied dates and blackberry coulis, soft carb, full and oily, bit syrupy body; thoroughly chocolatey middle with caramelly and almost marzipan-like sweetness to it, ending with a peppery note largely due to a cognac-like, warming alcohol effect, but the syrupy, chocolatey maltiness and sweetness absorbs it to an important extent. Decadent, sweet but not overly so and in that sense quite well-balanced for a style which is about anything but balance. Good in its genre for sure.
