COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle & Keg; Filtered & pasteurised. Note: Since late 2014 all Fuller's beers have been unpasteurised so there are no longer separate listings for cask and bottle/keg versions lon RateBeer. Please do not add new ratings here (unless it was an old bottle/rating). Ratings will be moved when time allows.
First brewed in 1971. Ingredients: Pale Ale malt, Crystal malt and Maize; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2020 Part of my BJCP study, as a a strong bitter. And it's a classic I tried multiple times, but I admit the last time was at least 3 years ago. Pours crystal clear light copper, without much visible carbonation and a small head, white and with minor retention. Some lacing until the head lasts. Aroma has a medium level of hoppiness, floral and fruity, but it's dominated by malts, with a toffee, burnt caramel and bready character. No evident diacetyl. Tastes bitter, but not overwhelming, with a lot of burnt sugar (homemade caramel). Again, malt dominated, but floral hops and an enjoyable fruitiness emerge soon. Nice smooth mouthfeel, low carbonation, actually quite flat, but lingering malty flavours go well with that. Long finish with herbal after taste. Overall, a great classic, flawless and packed with taste.
