COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. It was also the beer served at the Original Oktoberfest celebration, which originated as a wedding reception for the King Ludwig I and Maria Theresa. Bavaria was a very poor country and had little cause for celebration, so the King and Queen invited the entire population of Bavaria to the reception. They showed up that year and every year thereafter, and the event evolved into the modern day Oktoberfest. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.

Jabah (2479) - Fairfax, Virginia, USA - MAR 5, 2019
UPDATED: MAR 5, 2019 Decent all around beer. Second sample from Gordon, and finding them both very drinkable. One of the better semi-economy brewers. Grabbed a few different varieties that I haven't tried on clearance for 1/2 off. One of them is the Festive Ale/Oktoberfest, so curious to see how it differs from this. Light amber color, clear appearance. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is mostly caramel malt, but good hop finish. The clearance was because these bottles are almost a year old....but still taste sort of fresh....definitely not spoiled. Liked their maibock, liked this....eager to try the blonde and festive ale next.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2019 Ehhh....nice pour, carmel with 2' white head, which looks great in glass, especially at an airport spot. Taste ok too but not the knockout it could be. Fine for a lager I guess.

BrewSpot (84) - Zhengzhou, CHINA - JAN 2, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 2, 2019 Drank over tap in restaurant Good oktoberfestbier with a beautiful amber color. Scent of malt is the first thing I noticed on this beer. Personally, I enjoyed this beer a lot. Not too much thinking in the drinking process, I just drank large chugs, muy bien.

WortStein17 (93) - Alberta, CANADA - JUN 28, 2018
Clear with a dark reddish auburn color with brown chestnut highlights, served with a nice two fingers of solid white head that had a good retention to it. Light but malty nose with a faintly nutty hint to it. Flavor was nicely malt forward with a mild sweetness and caramel and biscuit flavor to it, as well as faint nutty, toffee hints, body feels medium/ light with an average amount of carbonation to it and a nice smooth mouthfeel to it, easy drinking and not to heavy. Finish is lightly bitter with a light balancing touch of faintly noble hop back-end that still leave a faintly lingering caramel sweetness on the aftertaste. Not a bad example of a Märzen
