Local legends aren’t just born, they’re brewed. And no beer in the Midwest has a grander brewing tradition than Grain Belt. For over 100 years, Grain Belt has been the beer that fathers have passed on to sons and friends have passed amongst each other at local bars and watering holes. It is a beer with tradition that spans generations. Which is why it has become legendary–both here and across the country.

In the 1940s, around the same time Grain Belt built its famous bottle cap sign overlooking the Mississippi River in Northeast Minneapolis, they introduced a “Beer of Exceptional Quality”–Premium. With its crisp, unique flavor, Premium quickly became the flagship of the Grain Belt brand. And still is to this day.

Although the Grain Belt Premium recipe has changed hands over the years, one thing has remained the same–its legendary unique taste. And now that Premium is in the capable hands of a brewery with an even longer tradition than Grain Belt–the August Schell Brewery–may you rest assured that the flavor and heritage of Premium will live on forever.

So as a local legendary beer, we raise a glass to all the people, places and things that make the Midwest such a rich and unique place to live. Here’s to you!

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2021 Brilliant in it’s simplicity. Coopted by bearded millennials for a decade (thanks for bringing it back into the mainstream) and now again a rare and difficult bar find. This is Minnesota in a bottle.

Bottle. Sparkling straw color with white head. Grainy bread aroma. Grainy bread with apple fruit notes and a touch of sourness in the short-medium finish. Light body.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2020 12 oz via bottle at Grit (Willey, IA). Clear golden appearance. Aroma of toasted grain and light lemon zest. Similar flavor, adding mild sweetness and a hint of bitterness. Light bodied and easy to drink overall.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2019 This is a backlog rating from 2011, from notes.  When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again. Words to describe this beer are grainy, corn, sweet.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2019 On tap at Holiday Beach. Yellow/gold pour with a white head. Slightly sweet but crisp. Much better than I expected.

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2019 This is about as good as a beer from clear bottle is going to be. Surprisingly, it's still not too damn bad. Shockingly, this beer wasn't skunked despite having no defense at all against light penetration. It wasn't necessarily surprising that this beer had a sweet cereal grain taste. However, it was more crisp and satisfying than it really had any right to be. For swill, this is actually quite decent.

ccex (1960) - Lansing, Illinois, USA - FEB 8, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 8, 2019 12 oz bottle pours a clear golden color with wmall white head and good lacing. Aroma is all grainy, mostly corn. Taste is slightly sweet with some bitterness in the finish. Body is light but not watery, with average carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. This one succeeds as a pale lager (far from my favorite style) and has a very loyal customer base.
