Dark and full-bodied, this is our interpretation of the classic English Porter style. Made with nine varieties of malt and assertively hopped, our porter is packed with flavor. Strong coffee and chocolate tones create a special brew for those advancing on the path of fine beer appreciation.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2019 2/9/19. On tap at the downtown brewpub. Black pour with a nice khaki head that sticks. Light roasted malt aroma, bits of ash, chocolate, coffee. Good flavor, roasted maltiness, a touch of husk, some chocolate, coffee, ash, dough. Not bad.

on tap @ Great Dane / Madison WI --- Opaque brown-black, beige head that sinks to a thin cover, sheets of lace. Taste is caramel malt, light carbonation, with minimal hops and minimal coffee/chocolate. Detracted by a syrupy texture and heavy feeling in the belly.

Great Dane’s Black Earth Porter is a roasty, malty dark beer that reflects the English tradition. Almost-black pour with a long-lasting creamy head. Lots of roast, toast, and even a little smoke in the aroma. Dark chocolate, coffee, and scorched barley flavors. Some bitterness but it’s not harsh. Full, rich palate. Apparently Madison knows how to do more than German styles.

This draft brew from the brewery poured a extremely small sized head of frothy finely sized clear colored bubbles that were fully diminished and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque dark ruby red brown colored body and a poor lacing. The mild aroma was roasted malt. The flat mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering mild roasted malt aftertaste. The weak flavor contained notes of black malt roasted malt and . Not one that I would likely drink again.

Sample at the downtown brewpub. Brownish-black color with a medium beige head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, roast malt and coffee. Medium-bodied with flavors of chocolate malt, roasted coffee and mild hops. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Decent overall.
