UPDATED: FEB 13, 2020 Keg at Harpoon Brewery, Boston on 20/03/2008. A big, malty brew with lots of dried fruit and cereal notes. Not quite as sweet as many a scotch ale, but pretty tasty.

Bottle shared downtown during RBWG 2014 - Asheville Late-Nite. Cheers! Pours clear amber-gold with a bubbly head. Big dried caramel aroma, with notes of brown sugar as well. The flavour suggests oxidation, with moderate sweetness, bread, leaves. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet on the finish with hints of cardboard, more bread and caramel. OK, but you can definitely feel the age.

22 oz. bottle at the RBWG bottle share on Friday night. Pours a deep, clear amber with a small white head. Notes of toasted malts, chocolate, tea, brown sugar, and cardboard. Light-medium bodied, with low to moderate carbonation and a malty mouthfeel. A bit of oxidation from the age, but I don’t know this would be a great Scottish ale fresh.

RBWG14 Trip Rating #70. Bottle shared at the Friday Night Downtown Inn Bottle Share. Pours a clear copper color with a thin frothy head. Decent head retention. Aroma of raw grain, caramel malt, mild herbal hops. The taste is caramel, raisin, grain, tea, floral hops.

Bottle @ RBWG Fart Share. Pours a clear dark orangish appearance with a brown head. Very oxidized, cardboard, caramel aroma. Low carbonation. Toffee. Too old.

Taste from a 22oz bottle. Up front, tastes oxidized. Caramel malt, light metallic. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter. Bigger body for the ABV. Lightly slick, lightly creamy texture Lighter carbonation. OK Scottish ale.

Brown pour with tan head. Aroma of brown sugar and earthy hops. Flavor is light brown sugar and light chocolate. Medium bodied with good carbonation. ok beer

look: 4.5 smell: 3.5 taste: 3.5 feel: 4 overall: 4.5 Huge head for this style (four fingers thick); it recedes gently forming a rocky beige dollop of foam. The color is ruby brown and seems to be clear, although not much light passes through. Malty nose although in the fairness of this evaluation, I’ve just had a spicy meal and it’s hard to get a clear reading. Strong dark ale malts like Crystal (100 - 200) or Chocolate are the base of the flavor. I like the hoppy finish which gives very nice balance to this beer. It is a very American version of this style because I have never experienced a Scotch ale with this sort of bitterness. Also, there is nearly no sweetness, although it isn’t lip-puckeringly dry, either. Technically, I would say this closer to a Brown Ale, but regardless, I like this beer very much would recommend anyone giving it a try.

22oz bottle. Poured a deep amber, almost brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of lighter earth, roast, caramel, and some dark fruits. Tastes of caramel, light earth, roast, and some smoky woodiness.
