COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Andover Liquors. Appearance is almost clear (slightest of haze) dark amber with nice sparkle, finger-width white fizzy head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is fruit, candied sugar and caramel. Taste is candied sugar, brown sugar, and caramel, dark fruit and late resin bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with frothy texture, average-to-lively carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, amazing that a beer with 90 IBU can be so malty and sweet. Not your typical DIPA--seems almost like a barley wine or Belgian strong ale.

On tap at the brewery Boston. Hazy amber colour lasting white head. It's big and sweet. Nails you to your seat. Big large hoppy. Alcohol heat on finish. It's quite big. Fine though. After you get over it. Quite a huge hoppy beer. Pine. Resin. Decent though. Yep pretty good. Pink grapefruit. Would get you drunk real fast.

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2018 I knew this was a big malty brew when I saw the deep copper-golden color. A creamy beige head clings to the sides of the glass as it subsides. Malty nose with a floral and vegetal hop nose. Caramel, toffee, and circus peanut flavors.

Since I went to New England few weeks ago and sampled a couple more Harpoons, I am becoming a fan of them. First sample of their Hef was a little off, but things have been getting better. This is a solid DIPA. On the orange side in appearance....clear....smooth mouthfeel. Good balance...but on the hoppier side. There are better DIPAs out there, but I like how this one represents the East Coast. I am eager to try even more Harpoons now.

UPDATED: APR 7, 2018 Draft. It poured an amber color with an off-white head. The hoppy aroma has notes of citrus - grapefruit and mango - and dank resinous pine. The bitterness level is moderate. Nice imperial.

A very bitter beer without the complexity of many IPAs. Brings a heavy booze profile, but forgets the nuance that makes a good IPA tick. Not my favorite, though I like Harpoon generally.

12 oz. aged bottle. Poured cloudy orange with fine sediment in suspension. Big caramel malt, pine resin. Too old to appreciate.

Bottle. Pours a nearly clear amber color with a white head and a good amount of lacing. Aroma is mango and tropical fruits, with pine and citrus and floral hop qualities as well. The flavor is rather sweet, very malty, similar to the aroma. Aftertaste leaves a pleasant bitterness.

Amber/copper color with small off white head. Floral hops and malty aroma. Medium body, some carbonation and a little alcohol. Flavor is sweet up front, pretty malty, orange hops, off dry finish. Pretty good, balanced, not that complex.
