COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the first with genuine provenance. This version is aged in Highland Park 40 Year whisky casks.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2020 330ml bottle [#00704]. Quasi black colour with small, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, beige head. Dark malty, BA supported aroma, hints of leather, oak, a nutty touch, whiffs of caramel, dark caramel, a touch of alcohol soaked, dried, dark fruit, very cautious ashy, smoky overtones. Taste is dark malty with mild, dry BA support, hints of leather, oak, a nutty touch, some dark caramel, dried fruit. Creamy texture, smooth and soft palate, fine and soft carbonation. Rather cautious, mild, even not much development of flavours as it warms up - expected more.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2019 11.2 oz. bottle at home, from notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma is smoky peat, chocolate, whiskey, wood, dark fruit. The flavor has some roast, dark fruit, and chocolate with a big dose of peat and scotch whiskey, wood, not my thing really, but this is better than most scotch barrel beers.

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2019 Backlog, bottle shared by Joe back in the day. Dark black color with a thin tan head. Not much lacing. Nose and flavor are dusty barrels, whiskey, cacao, peat, licorice, and caramel malt. fuller mouthfeel with a touch of sweetness but the barrel characteristics keep that in check.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2019 Balcony rate - 330ml bottle, been in my refrigerator for a few years now. Black pour, minimal light brown fizzy head. That aroma is an odd one - alcohol, sweet islay and something almost cloying - but limestone and floral ... you know? it's interesting and and 8. 'nuff said. Taste is not very beer-like - half bourbon, really, and some light Islay rope characte - overall very sweet and a bit boozy. Slick, still, syrupy mouthfeel, what seems more bourbon than Scotch in the finish. Interesting, but it will be a challenge to finish on my own.

Bottle (330 ml) at home. Bottled in January 2009, so it's nearly a decade old. Dark brown with a small bubbly beige head, no much retention and not leaving much lacing. Aroma is rich and malty with loads of molasses and toffee alongside oak, vanilla, peated notes, red fruits, light roasted notes, chocolate, light spiciness and many more flavors. Taste is moderately sweet with a nice mix of oak and whisky features along lighter (ie red fruits) components. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Oaky mouthfeel. Malty finish with a touch of alcohol and spices warmth at the end of the sip. I could never tell this bottle was 9+ years old if it wasn't from the date sticker. No signs of going downhill, lovely malt depth and a wide array of well balanced flavors including a strong but really well integrated oak and whisky presence.

Pours black into a tulip. Mocha head with little retention recedes to nothing. Dark licorice and soy aromas. Soft with licorice, cola and soy upfront turning to warm hot caramel, scotch and vanilla in the lasting finish.
