COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grand Prestige is a classic recipe from our friends at Hertog Jan in the Netherlands. We brewed this beer to their specifications here in Chicago, but we added a new depth to the flavor by barrel aging it in a combination of first and second use bourbon barrels. Two different labels exist: a Goose Island Grand Prestige for the US and a Hertog Jan Vatgerijpt series for Europe.

tmoreau (7963) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - AUG 19, 2021
UPDATED: AUG 19, 2021 2016 vintage on tap at Lunar Brewing Co. dispensed to a snifter showing a darkest brown tone, with a presentable layer of off white/light tan froth that reduced to a persistent ring, and doily-like cling to the lacing. The nose was malty, roasted, cocoa, caramel sweetness, dark fruit as plum & raisin, a touch of barrel, vanilla, and lurking bourbon. Better than medium bodied, with some lively spritz to the effervescence, the taste was as the aroma notes, with warming alcohol presence, and some roasted bitterness. Somewhere between an RIS and a Quad. Not overly hefty, but quite flavorful.

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2021 12-05-2021; bottle; at the Swedish house (received as a gift). Expectations are high. Bottle date is 12-04-2016. It is the European/Dutch version/label. I have had the beer in the cellar for over a year, but I can't wait any longer. The looks of the beer are great to begin with. It has a lovely dark ruby red colour. It seems to be rather clear, a lovely ruby red glow can be seen in the light. On top some smooth grayish brown foam is formed. Not a lot, but a nice creamy drape and some creamy lacing are left. It looks very tasteful. The aroma of the beer is great. It is very rich and luscious. Malts are rich. They give caramel and toffee, together with some ark rye bread. There are rich notes of raisin and dried fruits, some tobacco too. Also the slightest subtle touch of some licorice. Quite some nice dark notes. The raisin is enhanced by some nice vanilla and oak wood aromas. The oak aging gives some nice sweeter Bourbon notes, with extra vanilla and a far away hint of sherry (even though I'm aware it has nothing to do with sherry casks). Maybe the blend of oak and some of the dried red fruit notes gives this sherry feel. Hops give some nice earthy and leaf notes, very nice together with the malt aromas and the oak. Yeast gives some fruity notes and also some nice herbal touches. It has the nice Hertog Jan Grand Prestige base, enriched by the oak. Very well done. The taste of the beer is also very nice. It is very sweet. Sweetness comes from the rich malts, the alcohol, but also from the oak. A slight savory note from the toasted malts is there. Hops give bitterness and a nice acidity form the oak is also there, further balancing the taste. The result: a sweet yet very well balanced beer. Lovely. The mouthfeel of the beer is also very pleasant. The beer has a full rich body, smooth texture and medium-low carbonation. Alcohol gives nice warmth, especially in the finish. The finish is filed with lovely dark dried fruits, oak, some vanilla. It all lingers on for a long time, screaming for another sip. To bad this is a once in a lifetime drink. Wouldn't mind having more of this.
