One of the countless versions in Hof ten Dormaal’s extensive barrel aging project, this one blonde and aged on Isle of Jura whisky (I was actually hoping for Jura wine when I saw the label, but anyway). Very agressive gusher: less than a second after removing the crown cap, the beer streamed out of the bottle and about 1/4 went into the sink (which is where I opened it, being prepared by experiencing multiple gushers from this brewery in the past months). Egg shell-white, regular, moussy head, quickly settling as a thick ring around the glass with practically nothing left in the middle and eventually vanishing completely, over an instantly cloudy, warm, ochre-tinged peach blonde beer with a sediment of darker, dead yeast bits deposited at the bottom of the glass. Very estery aroma of overripe plums and spoiled nectarine, freshly cut red apple, a lot of (stale) blood orange juice, stewed rhubarb, lots of gooseberries, straw, baker’s yeast, red wine vinegar, gari, soaking wet bread or even biscuit, wet oak, moldy old mandarins, whisky but necessarily Isle of Jura though a faint peaty note is there in the background, paint thinner-like fusels, sweetclover, faint hints of gin, withering dandelions, pink peppercorns, varnish, goat cheese, urine. Kicks off with a whole lot of uncontrolled esteriness, not too much banana this time, but very bright and vivid yeast fruitiness, peach, pineapple and gooseberry galore, sweet with a strong sugared orange juice-like flavour to it which extends well beyond the onset into the middle phase; sourness, further accentuated by very sharp, prickly (over)carbonation, is however equally (if not more) expressive and even has a bit of a lip-smacking, vinegary effect, much more drying than expected based on the premise of this beer (and obviously a sign of infection). Full and slick, lean body, lots of bready and lightly caramelly malt sweetness, buried under a truckload of fruity and mildly spicy yeast effects; that orange juice-like sweetness, carrying onwards a lot of residual sugariness which even sticks to the teeth a bit, goes on and on, even when, at the back, the drying factors set in: ’palpable’ soaking wet wood including its tannins, an earthy hop bitterish touch, lots of lingering, bready yeastiness and, of course, the expected afterglow of a mild single malt whisky-like alcohol, heating but not burning. There very clearly is something ’rotten’, very sourly infected and dirty to this beer, as is the case with many other renditions in this vast series, but if it weren’t for the violent gushing and the over-the-top sugary sweetness that sticks to the teeth too much, it could have gotten away with that in my view. Now this is clearly a bit of a mess, though an interesting mess, like many other Dormaal beers: there is always something technically wrong with them, but somehow they manage to keep my attention and every now and then, I take the risk and buy one of these barrel aged Dormaal bottles - guess I am a sucker for that whole international barrel aging trend. As for this particular one: too cloyingly, blood orange-like sweet, but the sweetness gets stiff competition from a very big and expressive kind of gooseberry tartness resulting from a more or less welcome (yet doubtlessly unintended) infection, and then a pour of (only very faintly peated) whisky on top... Fascinating, not sure what to think of this. A happy accident let’s say, like many of Dormaal’s beers - so heck, let’s give this the benefit of the doubt.
