tfontana (3801) - Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - AUG 8, 2020UPDATED: AUG 8, 2020 Bottle pour from Harvest Market, Bedford (R.I.P.). Appearance is virtually opaque very dark brown (dark mahogany with light source directly behind) with light sparkle at the edges of the glass, 1/2-finger width light brown head that dissipates quickly to a ring and light leggy lacing. Aroma is rich roasted malts with milder vanilla and cinnamon. Taste is initial prominent alcohol (more just alcohol than bourbon, fades as it warms) yielding to cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla and pepper spice and heat. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth, thick texture, early alcohol burn in the mouth (fades as it warms), pepper heat, late esophageal alcohol warmth and finish as taste with persistent pepper spice/heat. Overall, disappointing for a barrel-aged beer as it doesn't bring out the best of the barrel. Don't know how much longer this was aged on the shelf.
