Schooner of brown! Tooheys Old’s elusive rival. On tap at Penshurst hotel. Sweet malt nose. Deep bronze beer with solid white head. Light carbonation. Full bodied and creamy in the mouth. Finish is a bit sour, a bit malty, a bit saccharin. Unusual survivor from a defunct brewery.

When brewed by Tooth & Co it was a better malty beer. Carlton took it over and down graded it a bit. Carlton are trying their utmost to discontinue brewing this tasty beer. Apparently it comes out of the vat first and has a nice brown colour. Carlton brews in general (VB, Carlton etc) are all wish you- washy. Carlton should not have been allowed across the river. They make Fosters too which no one in Australia drinks.

Tasted 7/3/2014. Draught at "Top Pub", Crookwell, NSW. Poured a clear coppery brown to dark amber colour with a thin off white bubbly head that provided filmy lacing. Carbonation moderate to high with many small bubbles forming trails. Aroma weakly malty, nothing more. Taste of sugary sweetness (possibly toffee), nothing else. Light body. Smooth and a bit sweet on the finish. Ordinary.

OLD NOTES JUL 26, 2004 An alternative to Tooheys Old, probably not as good. Has a weak nutty chocolate flavour with a watery cola like body. Cheap and inoffensive.

Clear brown color, teal head. Sweet, berry, fruity, English malt taste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Malty aftertaste. Sweet, malty scent.

bottle. Had a few years back, just adding to my records, but i do enjoy this beer, nothing special but enjoyable in the right circumstances.

Schooner on tap at the Ivanhoe Hotel, Blackheath. Pours a clear ruby brown, with a large white head, which lasts well and offers good lacing. Whilst it thus looks pretty good, it doesn’t quite live up to its appearance. The aroma is a bit weak, and mainly sweet malt notes, without much complexity. It is a similar story with the taste. Light floral hops combine with sweet, mild chocolate malt notes to give a light-bodied and very slightly creamy feel. Not the most complex beer out there, but a decent enough brew, and far better than the the swill on tap in most Australian pubs.

On tap. Pours pale russet brown, with little head. Sweet malts on the nose, and sweet on the palate too, with toffee undertones. Light mouthfeel, and rather underwhelming overall.

This is a beer I remember fondly. It was the beer that started my obsesion over twenty years ago. At the time nothing could beat a schooner of brown. I remember it as being quite malty with a very frutiy yeast character. I some how doubt it will hold up quite so good today. Anyway. On tap at the Berry Hotel. Pours more of a dark amber than brown with bvery minimal cream coloured head. Nice enough looking beer. Aroma is almost no existent and is not helped by the fact that the beer is served freezing cold. What aroma is there just reminds me of all the other mainstream beers. Nothing at all how I remember it. The is a little malt sweetness in the flavours and the finish is quite dry. Carbonation is super high and really takes away from the overall flavours of the beer. Bugger nothing like i remember and quite ordinary if I am to be honest.

375ml bottle. More red and copper than brown. Very clear with a haze of foam across the surface. Watery looking with a mild aroma that reflects the flavour. Nothing spectacular but I had to try it.Would not go back for more.
