Samuel214 (4202) - Örebro, SWEDEN - MAY 23, 2021

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2019 Thanks TimE for sharing the 2011 bottle! Taster showing deep amber with no head. The nose shows intense notes of strong ale malt. The palate is full bodied with barely any carbonation. Lightly sweet with strong flavors of molasses and a mild bitterness on the finish. No alcoholic spice. Big, thick and rich.

juiceisloose (3665) - Windermere, Florida, USA - MAY 6, 2019
UPDATED: MAY 6, 2019 2011 12oz bottle. Pours a very dark brown color with no head to speak of. Looks fairly still in the glass. They aroma shows notes of darkly fruits with plums, raisins, and figs, toffee, toasted caramel, and vanilla over a dark toasted caramel malt base with hints of bourbon, oak, and alcohol. The flavor follows suit with the dark fruits of raisins, figs, and plums up front to go with the toffee, toasted caramel, and dark toasted malt sweetness. The bourbon and oak laden vanilla helps cut throughout the sweetness and adds further depth to the profile. Full bodied and smooth with subtle carbonation that leads to a dark fruit, toasted caramel, toffee, bourbon, and oaky vanilla finish with lingering warmth from the boozy alcohol. Really damn good old ale with tons of depth am done flavors and tied together perfectly by the bourbon barrel. Great stuff that held up surprisingly well for how old the bottle is.

Admittedly, I feel as though I haven't had anything post worthy on this page for a bit. Over the course of the last few years/decades, the idea of an "unobtainable" beer has changed a heap - a lot of that in the "early days" was spurred on by reading reviews on Ratebeer - first it was Little Creatures pale ale (the highest rated beer in Aus at the time), then the likes of Chimay Blue, than Rochefort 10, then finally getting my hands on Westy 12...then Australia grew up and craft beer was a thing, and legendary/rare stuff that you thought you'd never even see let alone try becomes everyday pickings....KBS, CBS, BCCS, Cantillon... The world grows smaller, and the illusive become more obtainable. Yet I occasionally open up Ratebeer and see beers that sound amazing and ponder if i'll ever see them in the flesh... Enter this - a trade, for a Murrays Anniversary (3) ale. Old(e) ale is a rare enough beast in these times; more often than not favoured by it's more "palateable" cousin, the barleywine... Kuhnhenn - 4th D Olde Ale 355mL bottle from trade 13.5%abv no date....but i'm guessing a fair few years on it. Poured with gusto, not much foam, fair whack of yeast sediment so there's clearly a few years under the belt here. Intense aroma - oxidation presents itself as stewed dried fruits & cardboard & sherry, but there's a fair whiff of bourbon & caramel that has been taken way too far there too. Oh my, the texture is gorgeous. Very thick, could be cloying but the body has been stripped out with age & booze, tremendous length and viscosity, and oaken tannin still there... Aroma is sort of deceptive - I was expecting more oxidation but it's relatively clean; lots of deep dark toffee, old wood/cellar, vanilla & buttery caramel oak, it sort of hangs on the tongue, sweet then dissipates moving elsewhere - there's raisins, and figs. and sultanas, and expensive bourbon-y notes of cashews and toasted coconut, and it just keeps opening out as it warmths with more Oloroso sherry and toast and nuts, and booze, fuck me...Really never tried anything like this! Like I mentioned earlier - a rare style in its own right, one would say this is the/a benchmark albeit American as opposed the British in construct - certainly most appreciated by myself, and seems like the best trade I could imagine. Wow!
