COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses. New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2021 DATE: July 1, 2021... OCCASION: finishing an early-summer Tolkien viewing tradition with a beer I've had on a few occasions but haven't yet appreciated in a sitting such as this.... GLASSWARE: Ommegang pokal... pours a spritzy, reasonably bubbling sallow yellow body, its head quickening to an off-white ring... heavy wafts of apple cider, champagne, Saaz hops, barnyard blanket and hay must as well... not a clean aroma, but it approximates the style with the expected lack of malts...its body is light, watery but spritzy, with a quick passage through the mouth... it leaves an impression of fruits at the teeth and refreshes dryly at the back end... lacking the crispness of a pilsner, this instead opts for a more rounded mouthfeel... its flavor follows through on its aroma, reveling in apple and honey, with graham cracker, white grape, and lemon make this a varied experience, one that does refresh, if not invigorate... many will say this cannot be judged against its glutenous counterparts, but even in this light, it still pairs with enough food to be useful and stands well enough alone to enjoy on its own...well rendered, Lakefront....

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2020 Pours nearly clear, with faint golden tint and a thin, white head. Aroma is corn syrup and grass. Taste is corn syrup and light metallic notes. Finish is non-existent. I feel for those with Celiac's if this is your only choice.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2018 Originally saw this at the grocery store (Publix), but it was like $8.99 and wanted to read some reviews first. Then saw it last week at Whole Foods, $5 OFF ON SALE.....for $3.99. Figured it can't be any worse than lawnmower beer so decided to grab a 6 as filler. Still questioning if it was worth the $3.99?.......anything more than that, forget about it! Has a clear, golden-yellow appearance. Medium carbonation with light white head. Taste is pretty sour at first, a little skunky....not sure if thats the sorghum or not, as this is my first sorghum/rice extract beer. After a few seconds the sour goes away, then followed by a wheaty, grassy, grainy taste...semi-sweet at the finish. Still is watery though. Wouldn't really call this a fruit beer. Isn't overall horrible, and finding it drinkable on my first 3 tries. Definitely a daytime/lawnmower beer. For under $1 a beer, I am willing to try anything, so for $3.99 a six I guess I can say it was worth the try.

Hints of citrus disguise some of the less appealing sorghum qualities. Okay for a gluten free beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours pale straw with tall, long lasting, fluffy, white head and lively carbonation. Aroma is of sour dough and not much more. Body is medium and crisp. Taste is of sour apples and a hint of hops. Finish is long and dry. Taste is like a good cider.

New Grist Pilsner: It tastes like sake, bananas, and a mouthful of nickels.

Tap at Lakrfront. Seems refreshing after the heavier beer. Very light, not much to it.

Sweet citrus fruits, tangerine, sweet orange, molasses. Clear, pale gold, small, creamy, white head. Medium sweet. Sugary, sweet citrus fruits, more tangerine, lively carbonation. Way too sweet Pilsner. Keg at brewery, Milwaukee.
