Meantime Hospital Porter (called Naval College Old Porter in the US) is made in the same fashion. 24 months oak aging in used Bruichladdich Octomore barrels has lent a woody, intensely peaty smokiness to our ‘stock’ Porter, which we have blended with a younger beer. This latter adds vitality to the brew. Hospital Porter one beer that is best not over-chilled, and, like the original Porters, will mature with age. This beer has only been available on draught at the Old Brewery at the Old Royal Naval Hospital—until now. We have done our best to ensure that the beer would be recognizable to

Not bad a fairly decent Porter. I don’t pick up any of the Peat in either Aroma or flavor. I do pick up some molasses and lots of dark malt. A little bit boozy in the Finish.

Black beer with a cream head. Light coffee and light roast aroma. Roast and light coffee flavor with light chocolate. Medium bodied. Roast and light coffee lingers with light chocolate and light toffee.

As a yankee, I drank this beer under the Naval College Old Porter designation. There aren’t many Baltic Porters around here so I need to get one whenever I can. It was totally worthwhile in this case. Meantime’s brew pours lighter than the usual porter. More of a mahogany color with a dark red outline when held to the light. Roasted barley and light smoke aromas. Flavors of toasted malt, mild dark fruit, cocoa, woodsy smoke, and tobacco. Creamy feel. It’s extremely smooth from the aging but I like that it’s retained a level of bright, fruity, and bittersweet roasted character. This one gets better with some heat. It would be perfect to nurse with a cigar.

On tap in Greenville, SC. Excellent in all respects. Rich, complex aroma and flavor. There’s a multitude of dark fruit and subtle spice notes over a dark, bready malt base. There were 68 other beers and ciders on tap here yet I was dearly tempted to have a 2nd glass of this.

33 cl. bottle, under the US alias. Clear, deep mahogany with a lasting film of cream. Aroma of toffee, cherry, chocolate, toasted nut, light whiskey. Flavors of toffee, whiskey, earthy chocolate, raisin, toasted oak and potato skins. Nice touches of peat and cured tobacco in the long finish. Medium body has medium-plus carbonation that’s a bit much, but a very drinkable balance.

330ml bottle - $5.75 at Tasty Beverage Company in Asheville, North Carolina.

Appearance: Pours a medium-dark brown body with a smallish, light ecru head.

Smell: A strong scent of booze-soaked raisins and toasted dark-minded breads with some light spice and muted, blended notes of cocoa and wood shavings.

Taste: As with the nose, a predominance of raisiny dark fruitiness and toasted pumpernickel with a stray sprinkling of sugar. Some lighter hints of chocolate powder, tobacco ashes and minerals. Relatively light bitterness. A little mild throughout and approaching the drying finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: Had much higher hopes, but, ultimately, found it a bit bland.

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear very dark ruby brown color, thick 1" beige head, sheets of lace. Aroma of malt and caramel. Taste is clean caramel malt with woody overtones that smoothly floats into the swallow adding only a little fizz, and then an earthy, barely hopped finish. A robust, full-bodied, complex, well-balanced brew. If the abv was lower, it’d be one of my "go-to" beers.

From WLVL. Not terribly pleased they are SAB Miller now but this was really good, minerally smooth, rich but easy drinking. Serving: Bottle

I picked this bottle up more than two years ago but didn’t get a chance to drink it before moving overseas. Forgotten and lonely in my father-in-law’s cool, dark basement, it sat patently for me to return. I returned, found the bottle, and rejoiced. Then I promptly forgot about it again until I unpacked my beer box after moving into a new home. Very dark brown with a beige head. Full, syrupy body. This one is full of molasses, chocolate, dark malts, ripe fruit, medium wood, and a slight bitter chocolate finish. Very smooth with well a well balanced aroma and flavor profile. Highly enjoyable brew. (8% Naval College Old Porter)
