COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The story of New Belgium begins with an abbey: Not only were Belgium’s monastic beers the inspiration behind our Colorado brewery, but Abbey, a Belgian-style dubbel, was one of the first beers we released way back in 1991. Since then, it’s become our most award-winning offering. This garnet brown hued Belgian-style dubbel is strong on character and rich in flavor. Seven malts, including caramel Munich and chocolate, and a definitive Belgian yeast, waft off sweet, spicy aromas. Rich tones of chocolate and dark caramel mix with nuanced dried cherries, burnt sugar and figs. Sweet and roasty upfront, followed by a slightly bitter finish, Abbey is a lovely representation of the monastic beers of Belgium. Sip Abbey, and sip New Belgium’s tradition.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2020 Pours brown with a fading head. Nose shows brown sugar, cocoa, liquorice, spicy phenols and toasty notes. Flavours include more toasty malt and cocoa, a bit of bready and nutty malt, a hint of golden syrup, brown sugar and sultanas.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2020 Bottle. A clear mahogany beer with a small and somewhat lasting, lacing beige head. Aromas of raisin, prune, toffee, spice, baked bread, milk chocolate, cloves and vanilla. Mid-weight approaching full body, medium carbonation and a moderate length and intensity bittersweet malt finish.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2019 One of the first beers I rated, liked it and then tried later, thought it was off. So, here now a couple of years later, I am rating Abbey again. Using a snifter from from a TX brewery I pour to see a clear, copper brown body topped with a light finish of parchment brown foam. The scent is nice, caramel, cinnamon bread and dried fruit. And the taste, even better, apricot, spices, grain, fruit cake and yeast. My faith is restored, Abbey is a credible dubbel.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2019 Bottle from Total Wine in San Jose, CA. Aroma is bread, cloves, Belgian yeast, spiced breads, maybe some banana bread. Taste is malty, spiced bread, cloves, red bananas. Very straight-forward and solid take on the style.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2019 Ar: Figs, plums, and sweet cherries; a bit of apple and medium caramel; black pepper and a touch of clove. Ap: Deep amber-brown; small very light tan head with low retention, settles into a ring of foam with a bit of nebulous cover. T: Plum and clove; red apple and black licorice; medium-low sweetness; some toast; bitterness is medium-low, with a bit of mossy hop flavor; finish is dried pineapple and more red apple and clove. M: Medium body with high carbonation; finish is medium-dry. O: Really a stunning dubbel; other than the small head with low retention, this beer really is spot on for the style.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2019 Bottle, 10C. Clear deep brown with a beige coat that hangs around. 3+ No sediment at all visible at the bottom of the bottle, hmm. Aroma of brown bread, dried banana, cloves. And so it tastes. The finish - which makes it - is drying with spices and gentle but sufficient bitterness. Good.
