COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

BelgianBeerGal (5522) - Panama City, Florida, USA - DEC 4, 2021
UPDATED: DEC 4, 2021 2006 bottle stored in the basement. Absolutely amazing how great this tastes after 15 years. Good streak of molasses sweetness, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, a little booze and even a hint of hops. Really great sipper. Honestly almost no hint of age at this point.

UPDATED: SEP 25, 2021 2006. Mahognifarget klar med lys brunt skum. Lukter kaffe, mørk sjokolade noe kamfer og trevirke. Fyldig. Smaker kakao, mørk sjokolade, alkohol, portvin og kaffe. Sjukt å komme over noe sånt.

UPDATED: AUG 4, 2021 Bottle. 2003 Vintage .. well aged. Poured a deep amber color with a thin sized head. Caramel, some earthiness, dark fruits, chocolate, and some age, but quite drinkable still.

ajnepple (12995) - Lakewood, CO, Colorado, USA - JAN 25, 2021
UPDATED: JAN 25, 2021 2003 bottle. Unclear brown appearance with a small dissipating tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, port wine, molasses, dark fruit, mild oak, mild chocolate and light esters. Similar flavor, rich, malty and moderately sweet with lingering complexities. Medium to full body with a soft mouthfeel and a layered finish. Wow.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2019 2008 (at the tail end of 2019) poured into a snifter at cellar temp. Cognac colored with no head (SLOW pour to avoid sediment). Aroma is merlot, oak, dark fruits, sweet bread, caramel malt. Initial taste is oaky, earthy, merlot, fading into a light malty sweetness. Slick palate and next to no carbonation. Seriously good stuff. I can't wait to see what another 10-15 years does for the other bottle in my cellar.

tfredvik (2567) - Oslo, NORWAY - SEP 27, 2019
UPDATED: SEP 27, 2019 Deep brown body with a few tan bubbles. Very strong aroma of oxidation, fortified wine, caramel, dark dried fruits, brown sugar, chocolate, and dark roasted malt. And oak? Very strong flavour that follows the aroma. Heavy sweet taste with a heavy bitter, pleasantly alcoholic, everlasting finish. Full body, oily texture, no carbonation. Fascinating!
