COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Belgian Black IPA Crafted in collaboration with our friends at Great Lakes Brewing from Toronto, buckets of black malt give this beer a deep earthy-brown colour and a huge body. Generous portions of bittering hops add balance and tip the flavour profile definitively to the hoppy side of the scale, while Belgian yeast endows the collaborative brew with a slightly spicy undertone. Editor’s note: initially at 9.1%, went to 7.3% in 2013

Barrel aged edition from their 2014 snowcase. Really nice earthy and malty tones with a woody flavour on top of the phillips citrusy goodness.

Bottle from Jasper wine cellar & liquor store. Light yeasty aroma; with mango and pineapple notes. Very different to other BIPAs I’ve had. Light body, subtle roast with a semi sweet finish. Would have liked a bit more oomph to it!

13/VI/14 - 65cl bottle from a trade @ Klaas’ place, Gentse Biervereniging, Bier van de Maand, blind tasting - BB: 12/VII/14 (2014-630) Thanks to McBerko for the trade!

Clear red to purple brown beer, huge creamy irregular beige head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: chlorine, bit soapy, peaches and apricots, lots of apricots! MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: very hoppy, lots of coffee, bitter hops, bit chemical, fruity, lots of apricots. Aftertaste: bitter, coffee, bit sourish, very fruity, fresh and dried apricots, bitter hops, dry bitter ending. Very decent beer, still too much to the black and not enough to the ipa side for my liking.

AgentAle (2819) - Fort Mcmurray, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 4, 2014
Aroma is that of dark malts, clove and yeast. Taste is a roasty maltiness that is paired with a very pronounced bitterness that lingers until finish. Body is black with a bubbly pearl head that retains well.

Oakes (26757) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 20, 2014
Pretty close to black and with a lot of head. Aroma has lots of piney hop and some vague yeasty phenols in the background. Very fruity like chocolate covered oranges, lots of bitterness, dry finish, with a hint of alcohol late. Phenols are very subtle. Nice brew.

4.2
UXO (1896) - CANADA - APR 18, 2014
Pours nearly black with just a hint of cola brown at the edge, two fingers of persistent tan head and moderate lacing. Nose is piney hops, roasted malt, Belgian yeast. Taste follows suit, with citrusy and earthy hops leading the way, and chocolate malt following. More medium than full-bodied, surprisingly light for such a dark beer, and smooth, with a dry bitter finish.
