DarkElf (3424) - La Jolla, California, USA - DEC 3, 2019
UPDATED: DEC 3, 2019 02-Dec-19 (22-oz bottle with black wax, 2009 release)
This Imperial Stout pours a glass full of dark-tan foam which eventually settles to an inch of black liquid. And yup, a quick whiff and taste reveal this beer is infected, but it's still drinkable, though I'll only drink enough to write the notes because it's not particularly enjoyable. The nose is musty like Brett, with background aromas of chocolate and dark toast, but that mustiness is way too prominent for much else to break through at all. On the palate, the dark chocolate and cocoa flavors are muted by musty, dirty, and lightly tart qualities that again suggest Brett. A bit of tart cherry pokes out in the entry, but it's impossible to pick up any obvious barrel character through the Brett. It's medium in sweetness, but that's easily offset by the musty and slightly acidic qualities. The beer is medium-plus in weight, medium in carbonation despite the massive head, dusty in mouthfeel, and light-plus in acidity. Overall, though not a complete train wreck, it's still infected and that's greatly diminished the potential enjoyment and caused much disappointment. That said, it's drinkable and interesting as a somewhat funky and soured Imperial Stout, even if it wasn't intentionally made that way.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2018 Deep, dark pour with a dark tan head. Smells like bourbon, raisin, and molasses. Pretty boozy—heavy notes of molasses, woodiness, and coffee. A little spice at the end.

Pours inky black with a solid brown head. Dark roasted malt, oak, and raisin smell. Taste is firstly burnt molasses. It's then got a good ginger or pepper bite to it. The aftertaste grabs a nice, bitter coffee taste that hints at acrid. Overall, a great, balanced beer. The alcohol shines through, but comes off as a nice bourbon taste.

22oz bottle 9/21/16 (Pike Brewing-SEA)-44° in Snifter-Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, oak, and chocolate. Taste of the same with a bit of coffee and roasted malt. This full bodied brew is darn tasty and definitely the best Pike brew I have had. Don’t understand the low rating?

Brown black with tan head. Aroma is vanilla richness with light oak. Taste is the same with huge barrel richness with a greater wood emphasis. Good stuff, thanks, Dan. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at winter fest. Originally went for a BA kilt lifter, but was side-sold to this one. Dark brown pour, opaque, good head and lacing. Aroma: vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, and roast -- the usual suspects. Taste follows, well-integrated whiskey, on the sweeter side but with pleasant balanced roast finish. Smooth texture, full- body. Overall: I’m impressed by this.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate dark chocolate, molasses, light dark fruits, and vanilla. It pours a dark brown with barely some orange highlights. It has a small khaki head that quickly fades to a minimal film outlined by a very fine ring. There is some very fine webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and roasted malt. There is some light dark fruits in the background. The finish has light vanilla, roasted coffee, and a touch of black licorice. It’s medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel.
