Pours dark unclear thick blackish with a caramel head. Aroma brings some oranges and then pepper in the background. There is not much to the roasted malt aspect of this stout. The aroma and flavor bring some sweetness from the rum. There is oranges on the flavor at first that settle into the rum flavor on the backend.

From Growler. Poured a black color with an off white head. Lots of cinnamon in the aromas and tastes. Rum with some lighter coffee and citrus as well. I did not get the Habaneros or spicy peppers. Well done, but cinnamon just ins’t my liking.

Pitch black body, thin khaki head, a few streaks of lacing left behind. Nose shows mostly rum, pepper, and coffee. Flavor takes those notes and adds chocolate, a little orange liquor, roast, and cinnamon. Medium to full bodied, carbonation is on the gentler side of things, good amount of heat (courtesy of both the ABV and the habanero peppers), oily finish.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2014 Growler. Extremely unique. The aroma is full of green pepper and garden vegetables. This is a full bodied stout with notes of orange peel and cinnamon in both the aroma and taste. The habanero spice/heat creeps up with each sip and adds incredible depth to the other flavors. As the temp warms coffee and chocolate notes come out more and more with hints of the rum barrel as well. This is a complex standout beer unlike anything else I've ever had. The 14% is perfectly hidden.

Growler from the brewery. Pours pitch black with just a touch of tan head. Aroma is extremely vegetal like green peppers. A healthy dash of cinnamon also makes an appearance. Taste starts out with orange peel and cinnamon with a strong habanero kick on the finish. As the beer warms you get a touch of the rum barrel, and then finally a ton of delicious coffee and bittersweet chocolate in the finish. Thick oily palate. One of the most unique beers I've had.

This one poured a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma was big in the face rum and glue, and hardly anything else until this one warmed up, which then lead to cinnamon and chocolate, but very overpowering rum.Flavor was very tasy thoguh, a great mix of choclate, cinnamon, vanilla, light heat and spirit. Havent had pirate bomb, but assume this will be similar.

A - Pours pitch black with a small half finger tall tan head, quickly dissipating down to a light film, leaving little to no lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of cinnamon, orange zest, muted coffee, dark roasted malt, bakers chocolate and warm rum and oak. Has a lot going on but still fairly well balanced. Not sure what happened to all that coffee from the base.

T - Starts off with the cinnamon spice that never really fades away. Hints of dulled coffee, dark roasted malt, chocolate, warming rum and some mild booze. The spice is pretty strong, combining with the rum to leave a sweet spicy finish, lingering long after the finish. I just wish the coffee came through more.

M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, spicy feel from start to finish. Bit more booze than the base thanks to the added spirit.

O - I liked this one. The barrel treatment works pretty well with the base beer and the added flavors integrate well, it is just missing a big chunk of the coffee somehow. I would still take the base beer as well as the pappy over this version but it was still quite nice.

32oz growler In a tumbler. Pours black with a lacy, tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, a little rum, some pepper, Light cinnamon and oranges, and some alcohol. Flavor the same with a good blend of It all. Smooth texture. A pretty good beer.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Growler from the brewery. Pours a deep brown with a tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma of rum and cinnamon mostly. Maybe a hint of orange. The orange comes through more in the taste along with some chocolate. Much like a chocolate orange. The taste finishes with a slight habanero and alcohol heat kick. The body is medium with light carbonation. Very interesting and well done.
