Ernest (9030) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 20, 2020UPDATED: NOV 20, 2020 Bottle. Head is initially small, fizzy/frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow to light amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly yeasty (basement, cobwebs), with notes of oak, cranberry, apple skins. Flavor is moderately sweet, heavily acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, heavily acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation, lightly alcoholic, lightly to moderately astringent.
Pretty solid entry in this large genre. They call it an Oud Bruin on the label, but it barely even has an amber blush (pretty much just a dark golden) and the back label takes great pains (and far too many adjectives) to suggest it doesn't follow any conventions. For me the latter is more accurate; it's an American sour ale with no single influence from Belgium or elsewhere. And it's a decent rendition of that nebulous group of puckering brews...nice aromatics and aggressively sour but still balanced well enough to be drinkable, and the wine-like astringency helps offset the watery-fizzy body. I'm not sure this was really worth the 27 months of aging (time being money and all that), but it's enjoyable for what it is.
