COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sessions Black Lager is a traditional German Schwarzbier with a refreshingly light body. The dark chocolate malts contribute color and hints of roasted coffee balanced by the delicate aroma of German Noble hops. Translated from German, Schwarzbier means black beer. Schwarzbier originated in the 16th Century in southeastern Germany where it is still brewed today. The style enjoyed a heyday in St. Louis in the late 1800s, but large scale production of dark lagers failed to resurface after Prohibition. In 2007, the beer community of St. Louis honored St. Louis Dark Lager as the official beer of the inaugural St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival, an annual tasting event that celebrates the many breweries thriving in St. Louis today.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2019 About average for the style. Texture and flavor not quite the traditional European feel. Sort of like a Yuengling Black & Tan. Drinkable but forgettable. One of the better ones that I tried from this brewer though.

Sweet roasted malt on the nose. Some toffee and licorice as well. Ebony color with a tan head with some staying power. Rich sweet malt up front. Notes of smoky roasted malt. Very reminiscent of a porter. Bitterness is light and barely cuts out sweetness. Finish is a long echo of the sweet malt, with some notes of dark chocolate. Not bad.

appearance: seemed black; half a finger of light beige foam, shrinking to a creamy collar and cap. aroma: chocolate, cocoa powder, burnt toast, and coffee. taste: chocolate, toast, caramel and cereal, with a nice bit of earthy, lightly bitter hops. finish: really smooth, a little roasty, but with just enough hops and carb to keep things feeling light. notes: Lot of body to this schwarzbier. Roasty and smooth, but still somehow felt light enough to be almost refreshing. One of the best schwarzbiers I’ve had. Can from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia.

355ml can. This is an odd schwartzbier. Its watery but malty. Cocoa notes, seems off-style.

Pours charcoal black with limited head. Aroma with slight hoppy bitterness, chocolate and caramel. Thickly caramel on the palate with a sharp hoppy bite. Smoothly effervescent with medium body. Sharp finish, but pleasant in its crispness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can at home. Pours brown with two fingers of off white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is slight burnt toast, some chocolate. Flavor follows and is slightly sweet. Finishes clean. Nice beer.
