zoucrew102 (4959) - - NOV 19, 2020
UPDATED: NOV 19, 2020 750ml corked bottle, 2016 vintage. Strong ginger aroma with notes of caramel malt, dark fruit, burnt sugar, vanilla, oak and whiskey. Pours deep toffee brown colored with a half a finger of tan head that has decent retention and excellent lacing. Starts with strong ginger, caramel, dark fruit and burnt sugar flavors as well as having a rich, full body and smooth mouthfeel. Finishes smooth with vanilla, oak and whiskey flavors before the ginger makes another appearance at the end and lingers on the palate after each sip. Still quite good, though the ginger could be a bit more subtle.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2020 February 21, 2020 - bottle from a few years ago, but no date listed. Brown pour with limited head. Aroma was strong ginger, booze and hops. Taste was way too much ginger, mild alcohol, some caramel, dark fruit and slightly hoppy finish.

Clear reddish amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth malts, a little creamy sweetness. Quite a savoury toffee vibe. Fruity floral ginger getting slightly medicinal. Ripe citrus. Dried fruits. More light but bitterish toffee on the finish. An interesting and tasty barleywine but not one I could really get stuck in to.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2019 Bottle bought in Tokyo (Tanakaya), $27 CAD, Dec 2016, cellared for 2.5 years. Attack: medium dense malts, soft light crisp Mids: cinnamon, brown sugar malt, lvl6-sweetness, clean candied ginger, stealth alcohol Finish: lingering ginger spice, slight ginger heat Overall: Superb clean ginger flavour, complimenting the brown sugar malt perfectly. ABV is well hidden. Highly recommend.

UPDATED: APR 19, 2019 Slight bready, but initially vanilla then the bourbon is constant aroma. Clear and dark amber to light brown in color. Bold legs and tan, thin head. Well balanced sweet malt and hops with lingering bourbon and vanilla finish. Full bodied and luscious with but quite thinner than the Bigfoot Barleywine in the mouthfeel. Alcohol, balance and lingering warmth are there for a very good overall impression.

maekchu (5321) - JAPAN - JAN 17, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 17, 2019 Bomber. Nose of ginger and mosquito repellent. Flavors: ginger, caramel, spices, all a bit too medicinal. Medium-heavy body. If you love ginger, you'll love this. If not, you probably won't drink more than one or two sips. The ginger really messes things up here.

KyotoLefty (14291) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 6, 2019
UPDATED: JAN 6, 2019 Bomber. Huge, overpowering ginger in the nose. Also caramel and vanilla. Clear amber color with lace. Nice caramel and vanilla flavor, wood, whiskey, still too much ginger but not as bad as the nose. Nice, light, silky carbonation works well. Over-use of ginger ruins what should have been a great beer.

8/12/18. 750mL bottle thanks to Carl! Amber pour with a small khaki head. Sweet aroma, dark fruits, molasses, brown sugar, figs, with whiskey, plenty of ginger. Strong ginger on the flavor, burning almost, on top of sweetness, dark fruits, brown sugar, and whiskey. Not my favorite.

raphael (1640) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 6, 2018
Alcohol, but what else am i smelling—orange, coconut, catamel Flavors of caramel, brandy, the ginger is sharp & dusty and fits well with the piney hops. The mouth just keeps evolving among the flavors. Lips get sticky A drying, bitterish finish.

furthur (1961) - Eagle River, Alaska, USA - APR 23, 2018
UPDATED: APR 23, 2018 Bottle, reddish amber beer, nice cream colored head. Aroma is big ginger, malt, whiskey, and vanilla. Taste is malt, whiskey, ginger, vanilla, oak. Palate is medium thick, carbonation moderate. That ginger burn on the finish is nice, but I’m not sure the ginger works with the oak. I gotta drink this one awhile to decide.
