lmlikesstout (429) - Andover, Hampshire, UK, ENGLAND - DEC 23, 2021UPDATED: DEC 23, 2021 Siren Advent Calender 2021 (Day 23);
Can 440ml (BB: 29/06/22);
Look: jet black/very dark brown with a dense dark tan head. Low carbonation. Some nice lacing.
Aroma: chocolate, caramel, coffee, smokey, slightly savoury
Body: thick end of medium
Taste: chocolate, caramel, coffee, tastes like oil smells (weird I know, but a taste reminiscent of standing by a petrol pump), smokey, savoury wood
Overall: complex is an understatement. I love it. Not sweet, which is a rarity these days for imperial stouts. Warming, and yet alcohol is hidden by the depth of malt flavour

snowcrash000 (1790) - Cologne, GERMANY - SEP 18, 2021UPDATED: SEP 18, 2021 Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, moccha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, some chocolate and hints of coffee and licorice, as well as some distinct woody accents. Taste is a great balance of roasted, caramel malt, strong milk chocolate and lighter coffee, licorice and brown sugar, as well as some tobacco and distinct woody accents, with hints of oak and cedar wood. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some chocolate, brown sugar and woody accents lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.
Gawd, I really haven't been able to grab a proper Imperial Stout in way too long and this certainly fits the bill very nicely, with quite a strong depth of character and rich body and mouthfeel. While it's just a tad too sweet and boozy for my personal taste, it's really not that bad and there still a great balance of sweet and roasted, slightly bitter notes going on here, with the milk chocolate and brown sugar being most pronounced, but being balanced by the coffee, licorice and tobacco, while those woody accents really add a certain complexity here. Overall, this makes for a very enjoyable, quite warming, rich and satisfying Imperial Stout that is best sipped slowly in front of a roaring fireplace.
