COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed in the style of the old London Imperial Russian stout to a recipe perfected over 40 years ago, the roast coffee and almost port-like characters make it an excellent nightcap and winter warmer. Voted Champion Stout at the 2001 Australian International Beer awards having previously been Grand Champion Beer in 1988 and 1991.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2021 Lovely black appearance with a medium head.Creamy and smooth.Deceptive strength. This is shown on the bottle in very small print. Heard about this one years ago but the chance to drink it came at the International Brewery Competition at Burton in November 2021. It was worth the long wait. A new brewery as well for me.

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2021 Draught at Streaky Bay Community Hotel, SA. Poured an opaque black (with a mahogany dot under strong light) with 5mm of tan dense foam that retained very well and laced well. Aroma slightly of sweet dark chocolate and slightly roasted notes; alcohol well hidden. Taste is strongly roasted and sweet milk chocolate with hints of vanilla and coffee; alcohol well hidden. Medium body. Smooth and slightly creamy, crisp and clean with a medium-length finish. (18/6/21)

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2019 08-Feb-12 (375-ml sample bottle: Free bottle for stewarding the 2008 World Beer Cup in San Diego, CA)
Wow, has this stout aged nicely over the past four years! It's totally delicious! Pouring black as a moonless night with a thin blanket of dark-tan head that settles to a wide ring, the beer boasts aromas dark chocolate, molasses, tar, toast, coffee, smoked meat, and soy sauce. As enticing as it smells, it tastes even better, with flavors of licorice, chocolate bar, sweetened coffee, burnt toast, ashtray, cola, blackstrap molasses, and prunes. It's full bodied but not heavy, medium in carbonation but still very smooth, and dry enough to perfectly balance the sweetness, so this sweet stout is exceptionally easy to drink. Overall, this is really stupendous, the perfect 'foreign stout'. In many ways, it reminds me of the Old Australia Stout (brewed by the same people), which I haven't seen for over a decade, but used to be one of my absolute favorites back in the 90's. Love this beer and wish I could have shared it with others.

twist (22) - AUSTRALIA - APR 12, 2018
UPDATED: JUN 21, 2018 Lots of molasses with some char on the nose. Taste has some vanilla, dark chocolate and a underlying fruitiness. Bit of black coffee in there as well. Easy enjoyable drinking considering the 7.4% Had another one that had only been in the fridge for 30 min, more coffee aromas and generally a richer flavor. .

Dark loke the inside of a cat. Powerful flavor but mild bitterness. The perfect winter beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

375ml bottle into pint glass. Bought at the Bowral Hotel. Totally opaque black beer with two finger tan-coloured head. Nose has chocolate, cocoa, coffee and distant fruit notes. Full-bodied, zingy and effervescent on the tongue. Finish is bitter-sweet like really good dark chocolate. A beautiful fruitiness sits under the chocolate. 7.4% is well hidden. gets better as it warms. Another great Australian stout from a big commercial brewer. Why do they make such great stouts but give them zero promotion?

mattyhennessy (377) - Highton, AUSTRALIA - OCT 21, 2014
Pours dark and opaque with a slight red tinge. Solid tan head that retains well, eventually fading to nice lacing. Surprisingly sweet aromas of toffee and caramel balanced well with huge roasted malt character. Some bitter cocoa also. Flavour has a large charred malt character, espresso, cocoa with a little of.the toffee sweetness carrying through. Earthy and floral hop character. Unfortunate metallic taste that brings the beer down significantly. Medium carbonation. Like cooper’s stout but a little heavier.
