COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Butchertown Black Ale celebrates our 14th year by bringing back the long forgotten neighborhood of San Francisco where our brewery stands today. The nearby creek was once the home to over 16 slaughterhouses and was a thriving neighborhood till shipbuilding took over the waterfront in the 1930’s run up to WWII. The beer is a play on the senses: black as night, but with a deceivingly lighter body than the color would indicate and a dry-hopping regiment more akin to an IPA than a stout or porter.

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2019 Review from memory (several years ago) - frankly don’t remember a lot about the beer - except that it was really good - but the empty bottle still adorns my beer garden and it is the BEST painted-on bottle art (and outstanding text), that I’ve ever encountered - worth admiring on a monthly basis.

Appearance: clear brown with one fat finger of light beige head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pine, citrus, chocolate, liquorice, roasty slightly smoky malt, light mint? (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (8/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, off-dry lingering bitter finish. (3/5) Decent Black IPA. The hop character leads the way, but is balanced nicely by roasty malt. A good blend of hoppy IPA aspects and roasty stout character. This seemed to be a bit of a flash in the pan style, but this is a solid example of how it should be done. (15/20

(Draught at Man in the Moon, Stockholm, 1 Feb 2016) Dark ruby colour, almost black, with frothy beige head. Malty, roasted, hoppy nose with notes of chocolate, coffee, grapefruit and a touch of mint. Malty, roasted, hoppy taste with coffee, cacao, black-currant, mint and a generous piney bitterness. More than medium body, quite dry. Tasty and well made with a generous hop character. Very nice.
