COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2022 An interesting, unique Belgian Ale, something we need a lot more of in the US in 2022. Zesty hop balance, bright yeast esters. Balanced, easy drinking for the style. Rustic earthy hints, but clean and bright on the palate. Really good.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2022 330ml bottle brewed in Massachusetts at 6.5%. Clear initially, then clouding modestly with yeast light orange with a small-bubbled, good-duration 50/50 head. Clean and fresh airy fruity aroma, delicate tangerine, a sliver of grapefruit, and pear skins layered atop wheat malt creaminess. A little banana develops as more yeast is incorporated. Moderate small-bubbled carbonation, light yet robust body. Initial melon rind, peely tangerine, and floral pear develops into a dark brown bread meets cookie dough malt. Mellow banana and citrus zest vibes in the aftertaste, balancing light dryness with modest sweetness. Pour all that yeast in to ramp up the banana throughout, and add just a touch of clove spice. Spencer seems to get a below-par rap compared to the other Trappist breweries (when not overlooked entirely), but for me, their technical attention to (and generosity with) flavour and texture is unimpeachable, as beers like this demonstrate, with perhaps the only fair criticism being their considerable derivation from the Belgian styles, in contrast with, say, Tynt Meadow - but that's no problem in my book.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2021 Medium dark hazy golden hue with a thin white head. Subtle banana fruit aroma. Medium body with delicate fruit, spice, malt and hop flavor. Very nicely balanced with dry very mild hop finish. Pleasingly moderate high carbonation. Excellent overall…perhaps my new favorite Trappist single (Belgian or domestic)!

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2021 Bottle of 33cl, in a Trappist glass; from the fridge. Old note. Not a good beer? Not a trappist at all.
