Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, we’ve just changed that!

Cimbasso (1822) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 26, 2020
UPDATED: AUG 26, 2020 Bottle from Tesco. Pours black with a near white head. Good carbonation. Taste of dark roasted malts with notes of coffee and chocolate, and a hop flavour of pine resin and grapefruit skin. The mouthfeel is a little thin, but the aftertaste is quite long, mostly dry and bitter. Not bad for a black IPA, but I always feel that the hop flavour is not enhanced by the roasted malts inner his style.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2020 Bottle from Purely Cornish. Appearance - close to jet black. Off white head. Nose - pine and slight grapefruit. Taste - light caramel and chocolate. Bitter green plant stalks. Palate - generally quite bitter. A bit roasty. Overall - more of a hoppy stout than an IPA.

YantarCoast (3620) - Moscow, RUSSIA - MAY 1, 2020
UPDATED: MAY 1, 2020 500ml bottle from RusBeerShop in Moscow. Pours black with a tall light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, piney hops, coffee notes. Taste is medium bitter, roasted malt, pine, dark chocolate. Medium bitter finish. More tilted towards a stout than an IPA. I’d prefer it if the hops were more pronounced.

FACambridge (1122) - Chelmsford, Essex, ENGLAND - FEB 20, 2020
UPDATED: FEB 20, 2020 Aroma : Medium roasted chocolate malt, just a light touch of coffee, some dark red berries with a light piney/earthy note. Taste : As aroma. Body is fairly thin. The roasty chocolate maltiness dominates making it more akin to a straight up porter. Pretty good none the less

Cheeseboard (2971) - Somerset, ENGLAND - FEB 4, 2020
UPDATED: FEB 4, 2020 500ml bottle from local Tesco. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma: malt dominates with hoppy hints. Taste: light to moderate sweet & moderate bitter with the roasted malts overpowering the hops. Hints of dary berry fruits and pine. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Dry bitter finish. It's OK but the hops need to shine more and roasted malts to be less dominant for it to be a decent BIPA, for me

Goede koolzuurprikkel. Zeer zachte Black IPA, vlot drinkbaar.
