COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"There’s no question that Stone Imperial Stout is revered among enthusiasts," states Stone CEO Greg Koch. "I know, because I’m one of ’em and I can hardly wait for it to come out each year!" Some may think that a late Spring release for a special brew of this sort is an odd time for it to come out onto the market. Koch justifies this with the rationalization "What better than a warm time of year to come out with a brew that tastes great as it warms up!" That’s because "ice cold" is certainly not the appropriate way to serve the beer. Nearly without exception, the darker, richer and more alcoholic a brew is, the warmer the serving temperature should be. The Stone Imperial Stout label describes the brew as being "intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate...expect this mysterious brew to pour like used motor oil and taste even heavier! Serve at 55 degrees."

UPDATED: APR 1, 2021 Pours inky black with a small white ring. Aroma is roasted malt, small smoke, nice earthy hops as expected with Stone. Taste is medium bitterness from the hops with some from the chocolate notes. Nice hop warmness still after 5 years on a shelf. I love Stone. This is my last one in my cellar. Thanks COVID. I need more.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2020 I finally got the chance to try Stone Imperial Russian Stout at Aces and Ales in LV while there on a visit. By itself the brew would have been worth the tasting but I had the chance to also drink two other high quality barrel aged imperial stouts at the same time. The color is black as aces with a medium tan head. Nice lacing with this one. I taste a heathy dose of chocolate of course, licorice, strawberries and malt. Easy on the tongue. Quite good, not the best.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2020 Superlative. Just what you expect for the style. Scads of dark chocolate with notes of molasses, leather, coffee, and a hint of star anise. Full palate, but a surprisingly dry angle to an otherwise slow, rich finish. Bottle from 2016.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2020 Dark chocolate, plum, black licorice, coffee, smoky and booze in the nose. Fierce head out of a bottle. Kind of a crazy light body, though. What's holding this up? 2016 vintage. Big hit among the bowling team and friends. 9-5-8-3-15
