UPDATED: SEP 12, 2021 Amber, slightly cloudy. With a thin off white head. Good lacing though. Aroma. Alcohol. Lots of malts: Caramel, brown bread, a bit of tobacco. Also dried fruits. Hops less notable. Mouth: Heavy. Sweet malts, warming alcohol but also with a good bitterness to balance.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2021 11.2 oz bottle poured, pulled out of the cellar for New Years eve, 2020. Really a one of a kind brew here. Expected it to be great, and it was that plus way more. A dark copper pour, fading fizz head. Intense aroma of bourbon barrel, vanilla, and dark fruit. Aromatic from quite a distance. Quite the invitation to this brew. Thick body, warming feel, smooth bourbon notes, vanilla wafer, lots of caramel, some plum like dark fruit. Smooth and flavorful quad. Warming, lingering barrel finish. I really can't say enough about this brew. It is an exceptional sample within the style, and one I hope I can gain more bottles of for future enjoyment. A most excellent brew here.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2020 Bottle. A- Caramel, oak. A- Dark copper color, clear liquid, beige head. T- Caramel, tangy oak, mildly herbal. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- 8 years vintage. This has become nothing but caramel and a bit of anise and herbal spice with time. A bit letdown but can I blame it on the age perhaps? Just okay in it's current condition. No booziness.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2020 Dark amber body with nearly no white head. Aroma is caramel fruits malts. Taste vis plums dried fruits. Aftertaste is nice boozy

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2019 Rio Reserva is a fortuitous purchase at City Swiggers in the UES in NYC while there for the US Open. Perhaps the most reasonably priced of several I obtained, it is a 2012 vintage for sure. Still not cheap, just saying. The Trappistes Rochefort glass is being used, of course. Quads are great, Struise is near the top of the heap. Good combination here on the first day after three years of doing the deal with RateBeer. The liquid arrives a cola-colored, tan going to brown. Little head to speak of but the replenishing carbonation is vigorous. Good news for a seven year old bottle. Great scent, toffee, brown sugar and fresh dough. So now we are to the first taste, oh my, I wish I had bought two. Dates, raisins, a touch of cane syrup, dark bread, dark cherries, caramel, do I have to go on? Some booziness in the background. All I hoped it to be and then some.

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2019 Dark whiskey light carb light retention head. Aromas aged caramel, whiskey light, candy sugar. Flavors caramel, spicy wood impression, aged Candi sugar. Medium to high sweetness. Not getting a very high complexity as expected for this style. Disapointed. Taste more like a barley wine. Wi th just a mild yeastiness and the flavors listed, not the cup of complexity I look for in the style, there needs to be more here. St bernardus abt12 is a perfect example. This falls in the shadow.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2019 De Tercertiempocervezas. En caliz de La Trappe. Viendo Dark 1x09-10. La verdad que no le noto el paso por las barricas, simplemente me parece una quad con notas a barleywine. Muy rica y equilibrada, eso si, con abv bien oculto en sabor y aroma

UPDATED: APR 22, 2019 Meegebracht na een bezoek aan het schooltje van de Struise Brouwers in 2013. En thuis geproefd op 20-04-2019. Het werd langzaam tijd om mijn Rio Reserva te proeven, de houdbaarheidsdatum was al wat verstreken (30-05-2018), ben benieuwd. Rio Reserva 2009 is een donkerkoperig kleurig biertje dat er wat wazig uitziet en niet al te veel beige-kleurig schuim produceert bij het uitschenken. Het vormt een gelijkmatige laag en het blijft op een normale wijze aan het glas kleven. Daarna zakt het in elkaar tot een zeer fijn laagje dat daarna zelfs nog helemaal weggaat. Slecht weinig CO2 pareling te zien met middelmatig grootte bellen. HET AROMA: is honingzoet met opgelegde kersen en exotisch fruit, karamelmout, vanille en een sterke cognac/whisky toets. DE SMAAK: is vooral karamel-zoet, met opgelegde kersen, pruimen, rozijnen en exotisch fruit, ook nog karamelmoutig, een houttoets en nog wat vanille. De cognac/whisky toets kan je onmogelijk missen. HET MONDGEVOEL: Rio Reserva 2009 geeft een volle body met een eerder olieachtige textuur en een matige koolzuurprikkeling. Met al die verschillende smaken is het zeker een complex biertje. DE NASMAAK: is wat plakkerig en vloeit wat uit, verder nog karamel-zoet, opgelegde kersen, pruimen, rozijnen en exotisch fruit met nog wat karamel-mout, een houttoets en nog steeds een sterke cognac/whisky toets. VERDICT: Dit is een zeer lekkere en zeer zoete quadruppel die je blij kan verrassen. Het vol.%alc is met 10,5 niet al te hoog maar hij is van in het begin tot het eind wel sterk aanwezig. UPDATED: APR 11, 2019 Murky ruby red-brownish pour. Great woody nose. Bourbon, vanilla, port wine, dried fruit, plumbs; wow what a beer. Cheers to Olan’s 1st bday!
