COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2021 Probably not as good as a beer as it would have been if I'd had it 8 years ago. Orange and some grapefruit. Lime. Orange pour with good head. Bitter finish. Can.

BierMeHoos (804) - Maryland, USA - JUL 6, 2021
UPDATED: JUL 6, 2021 Picked up a four pack at the local shop, what a score! Appearance is hazy yellow with a medium white head that lasts. Aroma is tropical fruit and some dank hoppy notes. Taste follows the nose and is a complex mix of hop floral bitterness and tropical citrus with some dank in there too. Mouthfeel is good, fairly rich. Overall, delicious and smooth, definitely worth the price or effort to get it.

Mr.Spooks (4080) - Tennessee, USA - FEB 28, 2021
UPDATED: FEB 28, 2021 Big and brutal, but, as the description says, over-hopped. Starts with a lovely rush of grapefruit, orange marmalade, and melon, then gets an overripe peach current accented by wort and a slight vegetal funkiness. Grows wondrously bitter on the back end--I love the clingy, resinous pine--but the sweetness ramps up as well, leading to a heavy, unwanted spoiled fruit undercurrent. Good, but one pint is more than enough.

badpuppy69 (825) - Orange, California, USA - FEB 1, 2021
UPDATED: FEB 1, 2021 From a can to a glass. Pours a clear amber copper color with a slight haze to it and a huge frothy creamy silky head. Aroma is Orange hops upfront , pine, grapefruit, mango, guava, earthy spice hops, cracker malts. Taste follows the aroma with a silky smooth medium mouthfeel. Very tasty double Ipa!

UPDATED: JAN 28, 2021 16oz can from Brewers Haven. I didn't get the chance to hit Surly when I was in MN, so I'm glad we're finally seeing distro here. This one of the beers that put them on the map, and it's a throwback to the old days of in your face hoppiness. Dark golden pour with a lasting soft, foamy head. You can detect a hint of caramel malts in the aroma before the hops take over. Taste begins and ends with the hop bitterness, woody, piney, sharp. This what DIPAs used to taste like. Thanks for the memories.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2021 The beer pored clear, pale golden, and well carbonated; and formed a three finger thick head. The aroma was rather mild for the style and reminded most of ripe mangoes. The taste was an intense mix of tropical flavors of mango and guava, and a strong hop bitterness. The after taste was spicy and warm. Well done Surly.

hman43 (3700) - Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA - DEC 25, 2020
UPDATED: DEC 25, 2020 It pours dark yellow and clear with an off white head. Head retention is good. It has strong aromas of grapefruit and pine. There are some low resinous qualities to it with additional citrus hints. There are grapefruit, pine, and bready flavors. There are additional other citrus flavors with resinous elements and very low melon. It has a medium body with strong hop bitterness in the finish. Overall, a traditional hop bomb, but not overdone or overly sweet. The flavors are well defined and the finish is pleasant and long lasting.

beeratarian (305) - cleveland, Ohio, USA - DEC 24, 2020
UPDATED: DEC 24, 2020 Can dates 10-28-20. Pours golden with slight haze, fluffy 1 inch head. Aroma of wet hops, citrus, melon. Flavor is sweeter than expected, some pine and melon. Hops are medium bitter with a medium to slightly sweet finish. I expected more abrasion on the finish. Overall good but not the #9 on the best list. Too drinkable.
